It could just be an allergic reaction to a bite. I have had that from an insect bite before.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2023 11:02

Doesn't look like ringworm. Not necessarily Lyme disease either. Could just be a reaction to an insect bite. Take an antihistamine and see if it helps

MissMillyFluff · 24/08/2023 11:02

Yes definitely looks like an insect bite.

Seeline · 24/08/2023 11:06

It's just a bite. Doesn't look like Lyme.
Probably just a mild reaction to a mosquito or spider.

Cocoalover · 24/08/2023 11:07

It started off small a few days ago, I just ignored it. Then yesterday it was burning, again, didn't check it as its on the back of my upper leg. I've checked it now because it was itching intensely and it's gone huge 😮

Should I call the doctor in case it is lymes or ring worm? Is lymes rare though?

It’s a bite, you can see it in the middle, but if it’s spreading it could be infected. I called my drs surgery as I know mine was and could antibiotic cream.

Nortam · 24/08/2023 11:10

That doesn't look like a bullseye you'd get with Lyme's disease. And doesn't look like ringworm either. Google images will show you. Just looks like an insect bite.

MissMillyFluff · 24/08/2023 11:10

I would rub some antiseptic cream like savlon on it, it'll help with the itch. Maybe take some over the counter antihistamines, see if they help.

Cocoalover · 24/08/2023 11:12

Here's a better example, it is super red and has two round borders. Sorry I have health anxiety and I know I'm being over dramatic. Thanks for your advice , it's very appreciated

I had something that looked the same. It was a bite that got infected and required antibiotics. I left it longer than I should and it got so big that it covered half my thigh. Call your Drs office.

On the phone right now. Currently 7th on the wait list. Would they want to see me do you think?

It's not Lyme disease. DS gets this every time a mosquito, and in one case a spider, bites him. It's local inflammation and it can become infected. Dh had such a bite and managed to get it under control with liquid iodine rubbed in twice a day after washing it thoroughly. He also kept it covered with a light dressing. Ds' always gets infected and he needs antibiotics.

If it gets worse then see a GP for antibiotics, but you can try to get it under control yourself if you can get hold of iodine. We buy ours from the equine supply store, I'm not sure whether they sell it at pharmacies now.

It's neither ringworm or Lyme disease (Lyme, no S). Ringworm tends to have a flaky/scabbed look, and Lyme presents with a very distinctive bullseye rash.

It looks like a mildly infected and irritated insect bite. Try some hydrocortisone cream and antiseptic cream.

KnittedCardi · 24/08/2023 11:18

It looks like every bite I have ever had! I react to them all. Just take some antihistamines, and maybe go the chemists and get some HC cream. Don't bother with bite cream, it's never worked for me

You don't need to see the GP for this - try your local pharmacy.

Seeline · 24/08/2023 11:31

Just put some antihistimine cream on it!
It really isn't an issue. If it's on the back of your thigh and you've been sitting down in this hot, sticky weather it will be more irritated.

Merryoldgoat · 24/08/2023 11:37

That is neither Lyme nor Ringworm.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/08/2023 11:38

I get large reactions like that to bee stings (I keep bees so I know when I’ve been stung). Usually they burn and it feels like the skin is being stretched. They grow for a couple of days and the centre goes from red to dark purple. They then fade.

Antihistamines help. I’ve probably been stung 20 times or more and each time has been like yours or worse.

Araminta34 · 24/08/2023 11:41

You can clearly see the centre where you have been bitten, by either an insect or a spider.
Just go to a pharmacy and ask. They all have a private room where they can inspect it.

Cocoalover · 24/08/2023 11:45

Thanks for reassuring me. I've just got off the phone from the doctor and there aren't any doctors available. She suggested me going to a&e, which I find absurd? I don't understand that. I'll take some antihistamines now and see how/if it improves, if no improvement I'll pop to the pharmacy later.

Sorry I should have said I spoke to the receptionist, not the doctor.

They just suggest A&E as it's part of medico legal defence/or when someone's demanding they really need to be seen that day it's a way of passing that on - essentially "we don't have time to see you so if you really must be seen then this is where you can go". It's not that they actually want to go or advice specific to your symptoms just part of a script.

Bite looks like a normal reaction to me. Draw a ring around it, you should see it reduce in size over the next day or so. Try to avoid poking/scratching. If very itchy an antihistamine like piriton can help.

GRex · 24/08/2023 11:57

Draw a ring and measure it. Write down the time and measurement. If it keeps growing then get antibiotics from the GP. If it gets to more than 10cm without you starting antibiotics yet then go to A&E. Try 111 if you can't get through at your surgery.

Hellofromtheotherslide · 24/08/2023 12:10

Go and speak to your local pharmacist. When I had a bite on my finger that became inflamed after a few days, the pharmacist was able to prescribe me antibiotics. I didn't need to see a doctor. Another time I went to see them for something else, he felt it needed to be seen sooner by a gp and was able to make an appointment for me the same day at my surgery on my behalf. My pharmacy has it's own minor ailment room, so it's worth checking if something like that is available near you as it could save time waiting for GP/a&e.
