The farting exhaust

Am I right to imagine it's just about everywhere now?
I first noticed it becoming a thing about 5 years ago, but only in the rougher parts of towns. And then it increased through the pandemic to the point where almost every road in my home town is heaving with them, and it is bloody loud!

I lived in a small village through the bulk of the lockdowns and it was a rare occurrence, only to grow in popularity as time went on. Even tiny enclaves in the Lake District were heaving with them - we climbed Loughrigg Fell nr Ambleside during the summer of 2021 and could hear them circling the town from the top, crushing the sounds of nature to a pulp.

So it's a thing, but I am wondering, is there anywhere where this hasn't caught on yet? I live close to Ludlow in Shropshire and it is here too. I am not sure if there is even a 'type' of person who loves this racket, but it makes so many built environments incredibly noisy. I was once sat having my hair done in a quiet salon when one flew past the window, the sound was so violent and shocking that I nearly flipped out of my chair Grin

I know a lot of people obviously like it, but it is the dominant sound in so many places now, which is sad because it drowns out the general ambience of a place. Maybe I am old fashioned or something, but I don't like it! Grrr..

I always assume the driver is thick. It's a safe assumption to make.

I saw the numberplate on one of those malfunctioning cars : PU55AY
It also had spoilers.

Nuff said 🤦‍♂️

3d number plates and farting exhausts. The must haves on chavmobiles in 2023.

Airyfairy99 · 24/08/2023 23:57

Never heard it called farting exhaust but i live rural Northumberland and its definitely not a thing round my way ???? We get many tourists, motorbikes etc but no fart noises. How bizarre

Are you aware there are options beyond "anti-social noise" and "dog-slow shitboxes"? You don't seem to know much about cars if not.

I’m not talking stupid loud, but heavily modified cars with lots of power do tend to be quite noisy.

I regularly manage fairly high speeds (triple figures) in mine without needing to make a racket into the bargain.

OMG no, not triple digits! Personally, I’m quite partial to the double ton.

Keep it, and the noise, to the track like I and the others do.

I do plenty of track days thanks, hence not having stupidly loud exhausts. I have additional silencing available for a couple or cars which are marginal. Depends on the track as well of course.

No you didn’t, there’s no such plate.

@Shade17

Not really sure what you are trying to achieve with your posts. You like track days? Great thats really lovely for you.

Still the vast majority of people do not want antisocial behaviour in the form of loud exhausts going on and on during the evening. I for one would be happy for a mandate to ban cars over a certain volume from public roads. The police could then be free to impound cars that are clearly racing around the streets and use their common sense to allow those driving sensibly to track days to go about their business.

YANBU and I wish they'd shut the fuck up. Since next door got his altered it wakes me up every morning he leaves early for work.

Selfish.

Heatherbell1978 · 26/08/2023 12:08

I judge people with them. And based an appearances alone I'm satisfied I'm always right. Boy racers, vicious dogs that shit on pavements, antisocial behaviour, girls with inflated lips, feral kids in grey joggers...there's a type.

Shade17 · 26/08/2023 12:08

I’m certainly not condoning people racing round the streets with ASBO levels of exhaust modifications. Personally, I always try to keep the noise down in residential areas in my noisier cars.

It is only a matter of time before these anti-social motorists face consrquences for their actions.

CCTV cameras are being modified to record sound, so eventually the anti social motorists will be dealt with. I prrssume the areas where this will happen will be where councils can afford it the most but I think it should be national because they weally are a massive nuisance.

Our neighbour has an extraordinarily expensive Porsche that has such a noisy exhaust. It wakes up our toddler when he drives to work or goes off on a night out in it.

RoomOfRequirement · 26/08/2023 12:51

The venn diagram of people who do this and people who are terrible humans is a circle.

The chances are that it’s completely factory standard.

God I hope so. There was some talk about acoustic cameras pre-pandemic. I’d love it if they installed them.

I have actually begun to dread the weekends because all you can hear is the screeching and exploding of car exhausts. I can hear them even with the windows closed and the TV turned up. The sound goes right through the house. They often wake me up as well. From about six or seven on a Saturday evening they fly round the country lanes near me revving their engines and making a horrendous racket. I’m so sick of it.

If someone loves cars, and they work hard and save their money so they can buy something nice, great, good luck to them. It’s important to have a passion. But there’s no need to make so much noise. And these things always escalate. There’s always one little ** who has to outdo the others.

CandidClarisse · 26/08/2023 15:16

@VeniVidiWeeWee A35 AMG makes a noise in sport mode when you lift off the gas, it's not like the boy racer machine gun sounding ones at 30 mph lol

Mountainhowl · 26/08/2023 16:25

My old 206 used to sound a bit farty when the exhaust was on its way out, it getting louder was my cue to change the bean can that was holding it together (we were very poor) 😂

The really loud ones are ridiculous, without fail I assume the (almost always male) driver has some inadequacies he's trying to make up for

Nice, fast, supped up cars don't have to be loud, next door has a beautiful, apparently remapped Porsche, we never hear it!
