I didn’t enjoy the women’s football

My friend came round yesterday and we got into the topic of the women’s football.
She asked me if I’d watched the match, which I did, however when asked I said I didn’t enjoy it.
She seemed to take massive offence to this comment saying How could I not support women? We need to stand together. I wasn’t much of a feminist. It was a much better game than the men’s football (which I don’t agree with).
Lots of other similar comments basically implying I was out of touch and not supporting the sisterhood.
The atmosphere became icy after this and she left shortly afterwards.
I mean are we not allowed to not enjoy something without it turning into a battle of the sexes? I feel life is becoming exhausting.
I prefer men’s tennis too but wouldn’t dare admit it to her.
AIBU to admit I prefer men’s football without having to justify myself?

It’s fine not to like something, although the first goal (Hannah/Alessia/Lauren) was something special yesterday.

I don’t like watching women’s football either. I do watch men’s though. Not even sure why. Maybe I am just set in my ways!

I also hate women's football. Why are TV channels forcing this on the public - only children under 11 years old have vague interest. I would never encourage my granddaughters to take up that 'sport'. Thank God for Netflix

Isn’t that part of the point though - that young girls and boys can grow up have role models demonstrate that football is for both sexes?

girlfriend44 · 10/07/2025 23:35

It's less dramatic than the mens. The standard is very good and there's less cheating.

What a ridiculous comment.

I wish we could have a Dolores O'Riordan GIF for zombie threads!

I’m the same. Watched men’s footie for a couple of decades. I find the women’s game too slow. Been to our local stadium a few times to watch the woman’s team play but just can’t get into it, same watching on TV. I’ve really tried, but it’s not a patch on the professional men’s game. And I’m not going to watch it just for sisterhood solidarity! I think there should be changes, I.e. maybe a smaller pitch, as the women generally can’t kick as far nor as fast, so you don’t get the same game speed.

Bikergran · 13/07/2025 08:26

So don't watch it. Next?

Badbadbunny · 13/07/2025 08:32

Ironically, I far prefer women’s golf to men’s. Some sports work better with different sexes.

But you are comparing to British men's football. If you watch Spanish or Italian it's very like the women's game. Slower with bursts of faster play.

As a bloke I actually prefer girls junior football to boys. There is more team play, more passing and the kids don't all think they are pele. Plus in the main there is less of the coaches saying " give it to big John as hes the best player " and them thinking they are managing in the world cup final

There's loads of football on TV tonight. Two women's matches and PSG v Chelsea in the WCC final. Brilliant.

Nope, I watch international footie, all nationalities, not that bothered about British teams really!

But my point is that the female game is very similar to the top Spanish Italian game in style

TonTonMacoute · 13/07/2025 10:52

I watch cycling and rugby. I absolutely support the women's events, it's fantastic to see young British women doing so well internationally but I just don't find either of them as exciting to watch as men's events.

The sad fact is that many other people don't either and that's why their events don't attract the same spectator figures and the same funding, and the individual athletes who attract the most sponsorship are the best looking. It's horrible that this is how it is, but should they turn down deals because other, less pretty athletes are missing out?

We seem to be losing touch with reality in so many areas of life these days, and that we can change things by ignoring obviously facts and pretending they don't exist at all. That doesn't really help anyone in the end.

Why on EARTH did you resurrect a thread from 2023 to provide us with your profound insight?! And why, one page on from this, has nobody noticed it's a ZOMBIE?!

Since the women's Euros are currently happening it probably doesn't really matter that it's a zombie.

StrangledVowels · 13/07/2025 14:27

I enjoy football and support my home town (men’s) club, currently in League One. I don’t live there anymore but make maybe 5-6 games a season and follow, when I can, using streaming services. I also occasionally watch other football matches as a neutral.

Some games are good, some are awful, some are totally meh. Women’s football is no doubt the same.

TwinklyFawn · 13/07/2025 14:47

I have supported the same team all my life. I have never been able to watch Newcastle United women on the telly. I might be able to get in to women's football if i could watch my own team. I am not a fan of the England national team regardless of whether men or women are playing. I find international football really boring.

Why resurrect a two-year-old thread to post that you hate something?

From the thread title, readers will easily be mistaken that it is a reference to yesterday's match.
