To ring in sick after 1 month in a new job?

I am genuinely ill! Feel horrible. I was in this afternoon, finished now and I'm supposed to be in at 7:30am. I might feel better but not sure. They want 5 hours ' notice if you're ringing in sick but that would mean me ringing at 2:30am!
It's also a job working with people with weakened immune systems so surely it's better to not go in?
I feel terrible because there's such stigma with taking sick days. I get there are some people who take the piss and ring in every week, but it seems to be a badge of honour for having zero days off sick.
People can't help being ill sometimes and I hate all the shaming around taking a day off.
I've only been there for a month and I'm worried it'll look bad but I can't help how I feel. I know they will be really annoyed.
Not sure what to do tbh.

They can’t have 5 hrs notice if you were to wake up feeling ill one morning.
I’d just set my usual alarm, see how I felt in the morning, and call in if I still felt too ill to work after a good nights sleep.

Greenfingers12 · 23/08/2023 18:19

I am intending to hand my notice in soon ish ( before probation ends) in case they don't extend my probation due to this sick day (not related to this though!) I just don't know at all.

You are not being unreasonable

They are. What would happen if you woke up in the morning and only then you felt sick? Giving 5 hours notice is a ridiculous request and they actually cannot impose that on you.

If you're too unwell to work, call them tomorrow and tell them, you won't be in. You might find they have a right to not pay you for the day, but they cannot take discipline action against you for one day of sick, regardless how long you've been there.

If they try to take it down that path, you have rights and can contact your union or HR department.

Greenfingers12 · 23/08/2023 18:20

You are right, however it's the sort of job where they need immediate cover, it's community based and if I only give notice an hour before they will really struggle.

Yes that's true unfortunately I will lose the pay. I'm worried they won't extend my probation, but in any case I am not intending to stay for all of it.

If you're not intending to stay then just call in sickZ feel better

Why? Don't you like the job?

Greenfingers12 · 23/08/2023 18:24

No unfortunately the rotas are ridiculous and I'm losing a lot of unpaid travel time, I was told they'd sort it but they haven't.

Hmm can you tell them you aren't feeling well and if you wake up feeling better you'll come in but if you don't you won't?

PollyAmour · 23/08/2023 18:30

I'd give them the heads up now that you're not feeling well. Assuming you're a community carer, it will give them a chance to contact bank staff and try to cover your clients.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/08/2023 18:32

Why not tell them now and give them more time to find cover?

Greenfingers12 · 23/08/2023 18:39

Thank you. I still feel scared to tell them which is ridiculous!

If you are intending on leaving anyway, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It’s not like you need to pass your probation!

pamplemoussemousse · 23/08/2023 18:54

Just tell them now! Our policy is an hour before a shift, if someone felt so ill the night before they knew they couldn't come in I'd much rather they let me know so I could have half a chance of arranging cover than wait till an hour on the dot before to let me know.

I hope you get well soon OP Flowers

Greenfingers12 · 23/08/2023 19:03

Thank you. I shouldn't be so scared to ring into a job, I'm being pathetic!

As your planning to leave then either phone in sick or just tell them you are leaving now.
If you were going to stay then I'd probably say see how you feel in the morning but you aren't so why do you care about what they think /say?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 23/08/2023 19:12

Sick is sick regardless of the job you do and I would also want to leave a place that creates a culture where you feel pressure to put yourself and others at risk.
