Period Q. Are clots ever a cause for concern?

Sorry posting for traffic on here.

No chance of pregnancy

Late 30s

Always had heavyish periods since having children but definitely more heavy in last 3 years. often have small clots (5p size) however this month I've had several large clots (50p sized, one the size/thickness of a snack sized mars bar)

Are clots ever a cause for concern?

I’m the same recently OP.

I feel like whenever I go for a wee when I have my period I’m passing blood clots and some are fairly sizeable- a bit bigger than a 50p.

theyre usually accompanied by cramping as well.

Could be the start of peri. Mine changed in all sorts of ways in my late 30s, including heavier clotting.

Bettyboobaloo · 23/08/2023 11:19

I have horrendous clots today and one was quite alarming, I have cramping. All unusual for me, but happens every 6 months so I'm not concerned. My body is obviously spring cleaning!

I’ve had clots the size of my hand before and was told it’s not a concern, it can just be some months your lining shed is larger than other months.

I do sometimes pass clots. My periods are usually heavy and that's normal for me, they went heavier after I got sterilised a few years ago. I've had scans on my womb and nothing abnormal came up, only that my womb lining is very thick. If it's new for you then it may be worth making a doctors appointment.

I think if it’s new for you I would go to GP.

As with every women’s issue I would go with written evidence- ie a written record of the days you’ve had clots, how many, the size (10p, 50p etc)

Be prepared to force the issue if you actually want them to do anything.

I had this the other day with my poor dd, I took her to the gp who advised that clots whilst common are definitely a cause for concern if over the size of a 10p.

The dr prescribed tranexamic acid to reduce the blood loss and told her to take ibuprofen as it also helps. She took the medication and it helped massively.

Do not ignore, your GP will be interested and able to help you.

Yes. I always had heavy periods, but after pregnancy they were crazy albeit with similar sliced clots to the ones I always had.

Transpires I now have adenomyosis and endometrial hyperplasia. Diagnosed via biopsy.

Be prepared to push. My GP continually dismissed me and told me to take iron. Eventually the anaemia became extreme (admitted for transfusion after waking into A&E out of sheer desperation). Had I not done that, they wouldn't have taken a biopsy and I wouldn't have the above detailed diagnosis which also showed pre cancerous cells.
