School trousers for DS with sensory issues

Hi all,

Partly posting in AIBU for traffic but also because I’m beginning to feel that I am being unreasonable, or at the very least a bit stupid…

My DS, age 5, has some sensory issues around clothing, and finding him suitable school trousers is proving impossible.

He can’t have:
Zips
Buttons
Slim fit
Skinny leg
Thick material
Elastic ankle cuffs

They must be:
Pull up/ elastic waist
Breathable

Last year, he wore jogging bottoms during the winter but they were very thick and he found them uncomfortable. He is very happy in shorts but as it gets colder, I’d prefer him to have something more substantial.

In a perfect world, he’d have a loose fit, thin material jogger with no pockets.

Can anyone help (pleassseeeee!)?

DS, not DH!

Alphabeta123 · 23/08/2023 12:42

My oldest wears shorts all year round. its not that cold in the uk, so I let him (sensory issues as well)

ElfDragon · 23/08/2023 13:23

Some girls school trousers come in jersey knit, and don’t always look very ‘girly’. My eldest dd (ASD and learning difficulties, making dressing tricky for her) has worn M&S pull on jersey knit black trousers for school
for the last 4 or 5 years. They wash and wear well, and are just simple straight leg trousers. It might be worth looking for something like that?

TiredWelshMam · 23/08/2023 13:35

My 9 year old has sensory issues and wears shorts all year round. He will wear hats and gloves etc when it's cold, but his legs are not cold!

Good luck OP, I lost count of the number of trousers I had to take back to shops when my son started school!

I was embarrassed to find how many I hadn't taken back recently while going through old uniform. I sent a LOT back. But apparently not all!!!!! It's torture.

I wish DS had been willing to wear shorts - would have been so much easier! A friend has similar with her DD in that she also hates the feel of anything on her legs so she always wants to wear leggings.

LateSummerLobelia · 23/08/2023 14:39

God yes.

I once wasted close to £300 on super soft thermal underwear for DS because not only does he has sensory issues he also has cold urticaria which means he is literally allergic to the cold. Comes out in hives. (Try explaining THAT one to the doubters.. always make me laugh when people say 'they are not going to melt in the rain'... maybe not, but it might put him in hospital- again).

He could not cope with it all because the seams were double stitched and it sent him into the screaming full autistic meltdowns.

I did not send them back because they came from Denmark and I was devoted to the idea that he would get used to them.

Idiot I am.

GingerIsBest · 23/08/2023 14:42

@LateSummerLobelia Oh yes. Or that he'd grow into them if they were weirdly sized? I always had this optimistic view.

RIDICULOUS.

GingerIsBest · 23/08/2023 14:43

I also may have more or less cried when we discovered the joy of seamless bamboo socks. It literally transformed our lives. But we had a LOT of socks in the house before that, that never got worn.

LateSummerLobelia · 23/08/2023 15:27

I'll look out for seamless socks. DS either wears none or he wears knee high stockings under his socks with alot of talc powder. But he gets teased for that at school when changing for PE etc.

these

Quite reasonably priced aas they always have a deal on if you buy a bunch at a time. He wore them every day, for every type of activity, for about 6 years.

I think at 5 he should wear what you put him in. Letting him have this much input and choice is setting you both up for endless battles.

I'd rather teach my kids some manners and to respect other people than force them into clothing they find uncomfortable. Your parents clearly didn't bother with that.

ChristmasKraken · 23/08/2023 15:37

Just let him wear shorts. My son wears them all year round, as do loads of other kids at his school.

Soontobe60 · 23/08/2023 16:01

My GS wears shorts all year round - in winter he wears long socks with them.

Have you tried leggings under a bigger size of trousers?

Britpoplady · 09/10/2023 20:51

He has sensory need’s and literally cant help it! So What you’re saying is not helpful. Shame on you. Get off this board or educate yourself.

Britpoplady · 09/10/2023 20:52

You beat me to it. My nephew wares shorts all year round. He has sensory ones from marks and Spencer’s

It’s people like you that Fuxk up this world.

Lovelydovey · 18/04/2024 20:49

My DS wore shorts every day from nursery to year six - come snow or rain. Now he's at senior school he will tolerate trousers at school but is always in shorts at home.

Sensory issues aren't a choice, he's not doing it because he wants more 'input and choice' He needs to have his sensory needs met. As someone with autism I know how important these needs are

I’m finding the problem with most uniforms is they are synthetic and not cotton, I’m having this issue now with my boy too , I’ve managed to source some cotton pull up school pants and organic cotton polos so hoping this will do. I’m also having to ask the school to make an iron on badge for the jumper as the school jumpers are all polyester so I’ve bought a blue cotton one and hoping to just iron on the badge?
