To think "small boats" is an invented problem?

All secure, developed countries have 'underground' immigration which can be dealt with.

The amount of refugees we take compared to other (inc some smaller and poorer) countries is really quite small.

All the noise about it is sheer manipulation by the Tory party to get elected. To stoke up a fear of the 'other': vote for the nasty party and we will be nasty to the people you're scared of!!!

Why? Because their financial backers want to continue asset stripping the country.

I'm predicting another Tory gov next year.

It's not an invented problem in that we really must do something about people drowning, but I agree re the actual immigration and I dont think "they" really want to solve it.

It suits them to be able to blame people with dark skin and "liberals" for the way our infrastructure can't cope with anything, despite very small numbers, in the grand scheme of things.

Operation Red Meat 🥩

Don’t look at staggering inflation, cost of living crisis, unaffordable rents and mortgages, banks and energy companies making ridiculous amounts of profits, PPE scandal, this is what you should be angry about!!! 😡😡🤬😱

It's an enormous problem in a very small part of the country. If you're not in Kent, it'll almost certainly make zero difference to you.

Although I suppose it's problematic for national security when there's a route into the country which bypasses border checks, and in that sense it's potentially a problem for all of us.

I suspect Brexit (which a majority in Kent unaccountably voted for) has caused many more problems in Kent than the refugees/economic migrants have. They get distributed all over the UK, they don't all stay in Kent. Some are in a hotel about 3 miles away from where I live (not Kent).

I agree that we may be in for another Tory government because for reasons beyond me people like them. I also agree that othering doesn't end with one group. It's already started on the "our own" that people bang on about with cutting support for disabled people and with changing tax credits to universal credit, the narrative changed over time from a bit of support for people doing their best to bloody scroungers taking your money. It will get worse. Read the famous words of Niemoller and worry.

In fact, I'd say it's actually in the interests of the Tory party to keep the small boats coming.

It gives the public something to focus on other than the rampant corruption at the heart of the government.

Exactly - and if they were serious about stopping the boats they could do a lot - but in fact they want to fuck about pretending to take action and not achieve anything.

Classic misdirection from the Tories.

"Look at this minor thing that will make you really angry!"

I agree and I find it very perturbing.

Having divided the country with their stupid Brexit, they are now dividing the country further with the asylum seeker problem. The racists and xenophobes don't look further than the shite they're being spoon fed and see that part of the problem is because of their beloved Brexit: there is no longer the possibility of them being returned to the "first safe country" under the Dublin agreement.

The poor souls who arrive here in small boats are a useful distraction from the fact that all our public services have gone to shit, the price of everything (including rent) is rising inexorably and wages aren't keeping up, and people are falling for it. It's not in the Tories' interest to come up with a solution.

And while I don't think a Tory majority next time is likely, I'm not ruling it out, and I don't think we'll have a Labour landslide like '97. The campaign hasn't started yet, and who knows what dirty tricks they'll pull out of the bag.

The likes of the Mail, Sun and Express haven't really started yet, and who knows what crap the fucking dreadful GB news will be spouting.

(I feel so much better for getting that off my chest!)

Cry me a fucking river.
