To ask how you dealt with a wasp nest?

I've been noticing lots of wasps in our kitchen the past 2 weeks but just thought it was the season for them and got on with it.

This morning, DH left for work at 4:30am and I got up to a big note across the bedroom door saying "put your flip flops on, killed at least 20 wasps in the kitchen, too early to put hoover on" with my flip flops chucked next to the bed for me.

They are everywhere, kitchen sides, floor etc. I've looked outside my kitchen window and there must be at least 100 buzzing around the same part of the roof (we are first floor flat but nobody above us).

We rent, I've contacted landlord but is it his job to sort? I'm not scared of them but don't particularly want a nest right outside my kitchen window and I have a 13 week old DD I don't want to be stung.

@BellaTheDarkOverlord 😅 your poor DH literally my worst nightmare....my light fittings in question are directly over my pillow zone and apparently I like to sleep with my mouth open. Even after my nest was removed I kept plastic covers over the light fittings for months as I couldn't get to sleep worrying about exactly this!

Thanks everyone, landlord has somebody coming tomorrow at 10.

@BellaTheDarkOverlord that's awful 😭

We had one in the loft. My dad got rid of it for us by donning full coat, hood and gloves and picking it up in a bag and taking it outside. It’d been up there a couple of years and most were dead however some still alive and they managed to get under his coat and sting him about 5 times!

My dh is scared of wasps. A lot had died in the loft. A lot of dead wasps had managed to get into the light fitting above the toilet under the loft. Whilst dh was sat on the toilet having a poo, the light fitting above his head gave way and around 30 dead wasps came cascading down on his head from the loft. I’ve only heard my dh scream so shrilly once and this was it 😂

I shouldn't laugh but 🤣🤣🤣. I bet it was a quick finish.

I’ll admit we still tell the story quite often whilst laughing. Poor dh! It was a quick finish yes @userxx 😂

I had one in my loft. It was beautiful.
I called the council pest people and they dealt with it. Smoked them out.

One in a nearby tree I left. The old hive was amazing when it fell to the ground.

Recently had to deal with a large wasp west in my garden and was given this tip by someone who runs drinks tents at festivals.
Get a 2l bottle of (cheap) sweet cider. Pour about half away. Cut off the top 1/4 of the bottle and insert it, upside down, into the bottom of the bottle so that it looks like a funnel.
The wasps go in after the cider, can’t get out, send out distress signals to the other wasps who follow them in to the bottle to try and rescue them. You end up with a bottle full of dead wasps. The wasps on the rescue mission all get angry though, so you shouldn’t put the bottle near you - choose a designated angry wasp corner of your garden.

Man, that's the coolest idea I've heard in ages Grin

If you can see the nest, boil up a big pan of water. Bash the nest off with a broom and pour the boiling water onto it. Ideally then cover it in sand or dirt.

Absolutely, positively, do not bash a wasp's nest with a broom. And if for some insane reason you DO bash a wasp's nest with a broom, definitely do not approach it for any purpose.

Glad you've got pest control coming out. I've had wasps nesting in the eaves of my house and I just left them, but I don't have children and I was also not at the point of finding 20 wasps buzzing around my house every morning. In your situation I'd have done the same as you.

HappydaysArehere · 24/08/2023 10:54

Don’t muck about. Get rid before someone gets stung badly. Ring a pest controller and pay.

We've suddenly got loads of massive hornets flying around - huge feckers! Shock
Can't see a nest but think the best is somewhere in the garage roof or soffit boards.
Did think we'd need pest control but wondered if a pressure washer might do the trick.

Don't want to be murdered by really pissed off hornets though!

Honestly, hornets are much less of a problem than wasps. They look scary because they're massive, but they're actually really placid and chilled out in comparison to wasps and they're a predator to flies and wasps I think.

FiveShelties · 24/08/2023 11:52

@ManateeFair many years ago we had a hornets nest in our garden wall - the Pest Control man said they were much more aggressive than wasps.

User601 · 24/08/2023 11:57

If you can get near but not too near the nest, you can spray wasp poison into it.

Cyclingmug · 24/08/2023 17:42

All these people advocating insane DIY solutions! Omg, very glad you've called someone in
