to feel like a £10 gift card is a bit shit?

I'm wanting to buy an Amazon gift card for a friend that I don't know too well and is quite a new friendship, so just seems like the safest option (doesn't drink alcohol). I'm looking at options and I'm not sure what is the appropriate amount? Does £10 look really shit? £20 then seems a bit much... is £15 a happy medium? Maybe I'm overthinking this, but I really want them to think it is nice and not some shitty half assed thing, although I doubt they will be expecting anything.

Oh how I wish it was just acceptable to gift cash.

But personally rather than chocs, flowers, a plant or alcohol. I would much rather have an amazon gift card- at least I'd get some use out of it.

Why a gift card? It’s a bit meh?

Flowers or chocolates would be nicer.

No, they really wouldn't.

VaccineSticker · 22/08/2023 20:49

Wine chocs etc are very personal gifts. If you don’t know what exact type of chocs and wine they like then don’t bother.
gift voucher is lovely!

Why is it not acceptable to give cash? I'm made up when I'm given cash, much better than a plant or chocolates that I don't like, or a DVD I'd never watch, or a book I'd never read.

I would much, much rather a gift card than flowers or chocolates. Hand cream would be straight in the bin.
It's annoying when DP gets either useful presents or cash and I'm sitting with my umpteenth box of chocolates and scented lotion I'll never use. 🥲

Serendipitoushedgehog · 22/08/2023 21:00

I think for an adult friend £10 is fine unless it’s a special birthday because you’d probably get them a bottle of wine or flowers otherwise

FreddieEllie · 22/08/2023 21:03

@Mainly hand cream would be straight in the bin made me laugh Grin

fab football team/ sports mug or pen set or similar from official sports store?

Lincslady53 · 22/08/2023 21:07

I love getting a gift card. If it is cash, it just goes in my purse and spent. If it is a physical guft, I might or might not like it. But a gift card gives me the pleasure of choosing something that I might not otherwise buy. So go ahead, great him.

Bigdoglittledog2 · 22/08/2023 21:09

£10 is something I give kids. If I was giving an adult a gift card I’d give £20.

GiraffeLaSophie · 22/08/2023 21:12

@cherryassam I don’t understand why he can’t just have a present for himself, rather than a charity donation (which is not a present, unless you’ve asked for it) or something to share with his girlfriend. Is it just because he’s a man and the OP is a woman?

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 22/08/2023 21:12

What about just a couple of scratchcards in the card?

Dogsaresooomucheasier · 22/08/2023 21:12

I love gift card gifts too! Can’t go wrong with Amazon. A tenner is perfect - don’t want to go too high or the partner might think you are after him! 😂

Judellie · 22/08/2023 21:16

I would far rather have a gift card or cash than wine or even worse, flowers or candles.

If it's a bloke, get something that can be perceived as a non-threatening gift. I'd go for a Top 10 DVD, paid in cash, together with the receipt so he can exchange it or get a refund for something else.

Is it 2004? A DVD come on.

Amazon voucher is absolutely fine, unless you know he has a moral code against it. He's a new friend and won't be expecting anything, so a gift card would be well received I think.

TenThousandSpoons · 22/08/2023 21:18

I love gift cards too but would only receive from parents/in-laws or clients. Nobody (friend) my age has ever given me a gift card and I would never etc give one to a friend - I only give to kids/teens.

Cyllie33 · 22/08/2023 21:19

I think I’d find it a bit weird to receive a generic gift card as a bit like cash (not saying that’s logical) but a book token/gift card for particular cafe/shop you know I like would be lovely

mast0650 · 22/08/2023 21:21

My man is very happy with flowers or chocolates! Otherwise, I think small foody gifts would be better than an Amazon voucher. Cheese/chutney/crackers/coffee/cake/biscuits/brownies/charcuterie/olives./olive oil/posh vinegar/nuts...depending on what you think he might be into!

Winter2020 · 22/08/2023 21:21

As he is an opposite sex friend you have made through a hobby and he has a partner I would keep it very "mate" .

If no health issues perhaps blokey choc such as the large bars of dairy milk or galaxy or yes a present for his pet that is your shared interest sounds good.

Not too personal or too expensive.

I'd want cold hard cash

Top 10 DVD

Is this a zombie thread???

ThreeLittleDots · 22/08/2023 21:22

My good friends and I don't do birthday or Christmas presents at all... Is there a reason you want to give a gift to this new person?

Lottle · 22/08/2023 21:22

What about a nice bit of brie?

mast0650 · 22/08/2023 21:23

I like to give and receive books if I want an inexpensive gift. But you do need to know someone fairly well.

Caroparo52 · 22/08/2023 21:23

Make a donation to the shared pet charity in his name and let him have the receipt/ email thank you??
