To be worried about daughters mysterious illness

Whatisgoingon16 · 22/08/2023 17:31

She has a doctors appointment tomorrow but we are all absolutely stuck. Hoping somebody here recognises what is going on.

My daughter is 16 and physically has always had some problems. Nearly died of an asthma attack as a toddler, also had mono and got sepsis from it as a baby. Very close to death.

Physically she is thriving now, slightly overweight but so am I, think she gets that from me as she loves her veg.
She has been on fluoxetine for three years now.

For the last few weeks she’s been seemingly hit like a truck by this mysterious illness and none of us have any idea what’s going on. Seems to be getting worse, especially in the past few days.

She has been saying she feels lightheaded and tired all the time. Sleeping much more than usual, hours after going out or just from light activity.
She said she gets headaches, light stomachaches around under her ribs and aching legs and arms. She has lost some weight, not a significant amount, I think it’s because of her appetite going down.
She has now started to throw up, especially in the morning when she said she feels worse which made me wonder if she could possibly even be pregnant but I am not sure as she is not in school (starting college) and only ever goes out by herself when she wants to get some clothes/treats. Has no boyfriend and I’m the one who picks her up and she seems fine.

All of this is concerning enough but it’s when I noticed she was constantly eating salt (putting it on everything, eating from the salt shaker) and drinking water I took her to the doctor as diabetes runs in her dad’s family.

Blood test came back fine, no thyroid problems either (my mother and sister have issues) assuming everything else is okay as they haven’t said enough but it did come back as slightly low iron. No anaemia, just slightly low so she is on a small dose of iron tablets.

Now we are thinking perhaps pcos as it runs in the family as well, she did say her hair has been thinning.

Help would be appreciated we are flabbergasted.
She has changed as a person as well, so angry all the time. Said her vision is wavy and she sees patterns. Her depression has become unbearable for her just always in bed.

When I talk to her about her day or what she does she takes about five minutes to even come up with a sentence. I’m worried about my daughter, she said it’s hard to think.

I am going to the doctor as I mentioned with her tomorrow and I want to know some questions/tests to ask about. I’m bloody worried

The hair falling out sounds like Addisons disease too, as well as many of the other symptoms. Good luck.

Heyhofredo · 27/08/2023 23:09

Throwing it out there purely based on the headaches, vomiting, vision and feeling worse in morning. Coupled with the idea she could have pcos - Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

I had all of these symptoms but the condition was picked up during a routine eye test (saw pressure at the back of my eyes).

2jacqi · 27/08/2023 23:17

addisons disease?? re the salt and it also causes thinning of hair

Issueatwork · 27/08/2023 23:18

The ones I listed are ruled out by GP.

Edit to add I am surprised it isn’t thyroid issues because it runs in our family. The doctor said it was all fine in the blood test but 🤔

ChubbyChinook · 27/08/2023 23:31

She urgently needs an 8am cortisol blood test to rule out Addisons disease. I would phone g.p on Tuesday first thing to request a blood test this week. Don't leave it any longer. Addison's needs treating asap if it is this. Follow link from previous poster to read about addisionian crisis. Phone 999 if she deteriorates further. I hope its not, but don't ignore it. Good luck.

Lilyhatesjaz · 27/08/2023 23:33

A pituitary tumour can cause addison's, also visual disturbance especially reduced visual field. And really bad headaches.

sleepytimeplease · 27/08/2023 23:45

Chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, depression, irritability, personality changes, intellectual deterioration and visual disturbances are all symptoms of low B12.

Was she tested for this in the last round of blood tests? It's not normally included as standard.

She could have a B12 deficiency - and possibly something else. B12 is commonly overlooked, and it also often presents along with some other kind of imbalance.

Walesagogo · 27/08/2023 23:52

If the tests include Coeliacs then she has to keep eating gluten until the blood tests are done or they won't be able to see if it affects her or not.

happinessischocolate · 27/08/2023 23:52

Has she been tested for glandular fever?

My dd has just spent a week in hospital, she had numerous blood tests which didn't pick it up until a doctor specifically asked for the relevant tests, turns out she's had it for months which explains a lot.

She also has ongoing undiagnosed vomiting and stomach issues

Outonaschoolnight · 27/08/2023 23:58

It may be worth asking what the thyroid levels were - she may be borderline but still bad enough to cause those symptoms.

Did they look at sodium or potassium? These being abnormal are usually a precursor for Addison’s so may convince the GP to do a cortisol test. I have it and her symptoms are incredibly similar.

Swanswam · 28/08/2023 00:15

Addison’s disease/adrenal insufficiency. She needs a 9am cortisol test and she needs it urgently.

JetBlackSteed · 28/08/2023 00:38

You've not said. Have you ruled out pregnancy?

Whatisgoingon16 · 28/08/2023 00:45

Yes definitely not pregnant.

It sounds muscle related. There are many possibilities unfortunately.

How are her potassium levels?

Need for ingesting sodium is usually a sign of a Sodium-Potassium imbalance.

I don't know if your Drs have checked but in rare cases Fluoxetine can cause Serotonin Syndrome.

No one seems to have mentioned knowing her b12 and folic acid levels - so thought I would add that in here too.

Good luck - and keep pushing for help for her

Ohdofuckofdear · 28/08/2023 02:48

Get her checked out for FND OP, Functional, Neurological Disorder I have it and it's bloody horrible and it can cause all sorts of symptoms, for me it's effected the right side of my body and I have severe memory loss and facial blindness amongst other things I hope it's not that but if it is it's best if they catch as early as possible because then your daughter would be given a group of medical professionals to help her.

Good Luck with the Dr's.

NorwayLass · 28/08/2023 03:01

B12 deficiency

what are her iron levels. Low iron links to hair loss

GarlicGrace · 28/08/2023 03:11

Inmy40 · 22/08/2023 17:41

Addisons disease causes salt cravings and many of those symptoms. Her cortisol level needs to be checked.

@Whatisgoingon16 please look at this.

Could be an emergency.
Sorry, I don't usually do 'scare' posts, but it might be wise to check on her during the night Shock

postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. massively under diagnosed and may be a possibility

I agree - that’s what I thought of! I was diagnosed with dysautomnia(?) with similar symptoms. I’m now medicated and feel much better, my doctor agreed that without medication, I would likely end up diagnosed with POTS. But as it takes a while for tilt table test appointments and I’m being treated, I never bothered doing all that! Worth mentioning to a doctor - especially if she gets lots of difference in blood pressure and heart rate (eg it lowers massively from sitting to standing).
