It is in this house! But we just borrowed an extra £100k for loft conversion and other renovations which is cheaper than moving would have been.

I think £1000-£1500 is quite common where we live, it's one of the cheaper areas of the SW.

So jealous of all the people with mortgages under a grand. We got ours recently and it's £1300 (north west). Pretty crippling with all our bills on top.

Rent on an identical property (actually slightly better) on the same estate was £750 in 2018, and rent in the area has since gone up to about the same as our mortgage.

A quick google of average U.K. mortgage brings up the below so think YABU

The average size of a mortgage taken out in 2023 is £184,376. On average, Brits are paying £665 a month for their share of the mortgage payment, higher than the average rent payment. The average monthly mortgage payment for a semi-detached property was £1,262 in December 2022, 62% higher than the previous year.

In Cornwall you'd be lucky to rent a one bedroom studio for £665 a month. The regional variations are massive.

You can’t really compare anyone’s else’s
mortgages to yours because everyone’s situation is unique to them.

But I don’t think 2 k per month for a mortgage is the norm, unless you have borrowed a lot of money. If your property is worth 700k or 800k and you’ve borrowed £400k , then yes you’re probably going to be paying that amount.

Lat year our mortgage payments were £690 now they’re £880 fixed for 5 years. Ours went up £190 a month after Liz Truss fucked our economy up.

My house is apparently worth £350k and we owe £170k. We have 28 years left.

As I said I don’t think 2k per month is the norm for most average people.

I only £1800 after tax and my DW earns £900 per month. So we couldn’t even afford 2k. We’d have to move and sell if it got to that.
