How do people afford holidays?

We usually book a UK holiday, cheap and cheerful.

We're now in a position to save approx £300/month towards a holiday. I thought that was great, it's the bulk of our savings each month.

I recognise that we're in a very fortunate position, and I thought this would get us our first abroad holiday.

I'm looking at 10 nights all inclusive at a nice (but not luxury) hotel in Europe. Shit flights, they all are. And school holidays, so paying a premium. And its coming in at £4-6k.

Is this crazy or has it always been like this? How are people affording this?
That doesn't even include any spending money, or any clothes or suitcases (we wouldn't need much - and can borrow suitcases).

It's really got me down. Am I doing something wrong?? Looking in the wrong places (tui, on the beach, jet2holidays etc)? Is it much cheaper if I booked closer to the time?

First to say “cruise”.
Ok so you hate the idea…but …what hotel turns down your room twice a day? What hotel comes with your own room steward? What AI gives you al a carte and buffet and room service whilst not going down the cafeteria route?

Even if you hate the ship and all the passengers you still get to leave every morning to look round a different city. And go back to a room that has a balcony sea view.

New city every day? Sounds awful to me. I want to actually see a place properly 😕

We’ve just booked Tunisia through Tui. 2 adults 2 kids we got one free child place and also £250 off! Costing £2.5k all inclusive for 7 days. We’re going term time. Always do. Half term prices is absolute daylight robbery

MadameBrigitte · 02/03/2024 10:11

August 2023 we spent £3500 for 10 nights AI 5* in Turkey for 2 adults, 1child.
Same holiday this year coming in at £5600.
That was on Jet2.

Haven't booked yet, hoping prices go down a bit as it gets nearer!

We always went camping in France in the early 2000’s. A quick hike over the boardwalk on the dunes, and a 20 km long white beach on the Atlantic coast! Cost us around £2500 for 2 Adults and 2 kids for 2 weeks back then…

Prices have increased hugely .lots of people do maybe have more cash/help from relations whatever.as others say go out of holiday time if u can ,fines are often cheaper!

You were ripped off. We holiday for less than 1500 between us, regularly

For 14 nights in Ibiza? Really? Plus the poster going to Ibiza didn't say how many people were going I believe so not sure how you could say that.

We just paid £5800 for 10 nights in Greece in August, AI, for 5 people, 4 stars. If you can find that somewhere for £1500 please show me how.

I'm taking 4 of us on a Norwegian cruise NEXT April for a bit over £2400. We've got friends and family coming as well, as it's a "big birthday" celebration for some of the attendees.

Don't go in August? We are going the week before the kids break up to keep ours down and doing 14 nights. Took him out for 14 days last year to do Mexico in October.

We are going to Italy for a week, two adults, two kids. Flights £320 all up, villa with pool £2000, then hire car ,£200. Food not included but Italy is cheaper than here for eating out.

We use Skyscanner or Google to find cheaper airports to fly into.

Edited

I love the travel as much of the arrival. Road trips, horse trekking and week long hikes like the South Downs Way have all been fabulous. I notice no one says “ oh a road trip through Europe, how ghastly you only stay somewhere for one night”😁

Being on the sea is fantastic. Smells amazing, feels wonderful. Also been on a mates yacht around the Greek Islands which was fun but not that relaxing ( lots of looking out for weather etc).

There literally a million holidays you can in one place for a week or two so don’t worry about it.

Where in Italy is this, what airport are you flying from and to, how much baggage allowance have you taken? Are the flights for 4 seats?

We've just got back from Italy, food was incrediblly expensive, both in supermarkets and eating out

Caspianberg · 05/03/2024 08:10

@bellac11 - London standard to Trieste often has very cheap flights. It’s cheaper to fly there and easily get to anywhere northern Italy, Slovenia or Croatia.
