To ask if you can have a period if you have no fallopian tubes?!

Backstory…. I’m 43 … ten years ago I had several operations on my reproductive system - this was due to me having a period that went on for the best part of a year. The operations done over a few months included an oblation, having my fallopian tubes removed and being sterilised. I’ve not had a single period since the operations were performed.

So fast forward to today …. I went to the toilet and realised i’m bleeding….. baffled and having reassured myself I’d not managed to cause any kind of damage down there (Fuck knows what I thought I could’ve done 🤦‍♀️😂) but I am actually convinced that after ten years of nothing I’m having a bloody period!!!! (Pun intended)

This is literally my worst nightmare so my aibu is-
How the hell am I having a period with no fallopian tubes and barely any reproductive system left?
Surely that’s impossible right? Or not?
And also could it be linked to the fact my 11 year old DD started her periods for the first time 10 days ago?!

If anyone has any thoughts on what might be going on I’d love to hear them as I’m at a loss but WTAF!!!

I'm.not a medic. I think you should speak to your GP.

35965a · 21/08/2023 19:56

Nobody here can tell you, but any changes like that really need to be investigated by a doctor

gwenneh · 21/08/2023 19:56

Of course you can. A salpingectomy doesn't impact your periods.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 21/08/2023 19:58

The ablation is what would have stopped the bleeding - they can fail after a while.

Assuming your ovaries were left in tact and functional, you would still menstruate even though you have your fallopian tubes removed. Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining rather than anything directly coming from the ovaries. The ovaries make the hormones that make the uterus lining thicken, and they do that so long as they remain/are functioning properly.

But yeah, best to go to your GP.

Testina · 21/08/2023 19:58

How annoying for you!

Firstly, it’s got nothing to do with your daughter’s body.

Your period is the shedding of the lining of your uterus - it’s got nothing to do with Fallopian tubes. Sterilisation does stop periods. You need to see your GP.

APintOfWine11 · 21/08/2023 19:59

DM still has I guess you’d say something incredibly similar to a period. She had her tubes tied then removed. She has fairly excessive growths all over her uterus and is awaiting surgery which they believe is the cause of the bleeding. I’m really sorry I can’t off the top of my head remember exactly what she was diagnosed with. I second speaking to your GP, as in theory you shouldn’t be having periods.

Bleepbloopbluurp · 21/08/2023 19:59

If you still have your ovaries and uterus then you can still menstruate.
Whether an egg is able to travel to the uterus or not isn't relevant to the hormonal cycle that gives you periods
BUT you haven't bled in years and a change needs checking out.

YouMustBeHotYourPantsAreOnFire · 21/08/2023 20:01

The womb lining has probably grown back, hence the bleeding. It’s the reason I insisted on a total hysterectomy rather than ablation, I knew it growing back was a possibility. Not something they willingly informed me of though.

It's possible that the endometrial lining will grow back after an endometrial ablation. However, it usually takes a long time. If this occurs, another endometrial ablation can be done if necessary.

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2023 20:03

You don't need tubes to have a period.

LittleSleepingDog · 21/08/2023 20:07

Your fallopian tubes are irrelevant to your periods - they are not involved in any way in the process that causes you to menstruate - it only requires a little functioning ovarian tissue and a uterus. An ablation would stop you from menstrating, but perhaps not forever.

iamthattree · 21/08/2023 20:09

I haven't had fallopian tubes for 15 years and have a period every single month except a year when I was pregnant (ivf obvs). Doesn't impact at all. I still have very obvious ovulation as well even though any egg just wanders around wherever it fancies.

One for the gp to check.

JeezLouweez · 21/08/2023 20:23

Yes I’ve put in a request for a phone call from the gp already. I said the bit about my daughter in a lighthearted way…. My friend had a phantom random period a week after her daughter started hers and women sync when living together or together a lot but didn’t actually think it was because my daughter started hers lol 😂
I just assumed with most of my reproductive system gone and not having had one in ten years that I wouldn’t be getting any more…. You live and learn …. Thanks all for your comments

“My friend had a phantom random period a week after her daughter started hers”

What the hell is a phantom period?!

Do you mean that your friend had a coincidental stomach cramp?

Testina · 21/08/2023 20:35

“with most of my reproductive system gone”

I think that’s the thing though - your Fallopian tubes (even if fully removed not clipped) aren’t most of your reproductive system.

Still an entire uterus there to potentially re grow an endometrium, and ovaries too.

Definitely check in with your GP, but perfectly possible you just need a second ablation.

changedmynam · 21/08/2023 20:55

I've had 1 ovary and fallopian tube removed completely.

Other ovary is present but the fallopian tube has been cut (twice) so I'm also sterilised.

My periods restarted almost exactly 4 weeks after the operation and were back to clockwork 28 day cycles about 6 months after.
