Midnight mid week too late for garden noise?

London gardens but not huge. Neighbours have a pool that takes up most of their garden. Obviously, warm weather means they're using it.

I've texted a couple of times at about 10.45pm when their (late) teens and mates are being particularly noisy (shouts and screams and general messing around) asking them to ask them to be quiet (shouts from our window had gone ignored). Neighbour thinks midnight is a reasonable time for them to come indoors. This is mid week - even though I know it's currently school holidays, most of us adults still have to be up for work!
I've just received a text to say "x having friends round to use pool tonight, they will make sure they come in at midnight so they don't disturb".

AIBU that midnight is too late? Especially when it isn't a one off, it's at least twice a week.

Midnight is a ridiculous time to expect people to be ok with noise. 10pm but even that’s pushing it imo.

I think if it’s only a few nights a year when it’s sunny I’d let it go - could you get ear plugs?

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 21/08/2023 18:09

Pretty sure 11pm is what the noise rules around fireworks are so I'd say that 11pm is considered a reasonable time...

But at the same time, it's the school holidays and we don't get many days you can actually use a pool that late into the night and I'd let the kids enjoy it during the holidays.

I would say it's been 15 times this summer already. Two to three times a week while the teens are home from university. Not 3 or 4 times a year.

But it's not school holidays for adults getting up for work.

I think maybe I am over tired!!

It's not sunny at night, they could go inside earlier

Could they have fun inside, and save outside fun for weekends maybe?! ;)

Some people work early mornings on the weekend too...

OP said late teens, so I'd guess 17 to 19, so likely know what it's like to get up for work

AvengedQuince · 21/08/2023 20:50

Noticed it is uni students, they should certainly know better, though maybe not with parents like that!

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 21/08/2023 21:35

Uni students who are likely to party late and still roll out of bed for lecture.
Who are young enough to be able to stay up late and get up early and not feel it. We've all done it
I really don't think midnight, for a couple of time a week when it happens to be hot enough to stay out (most of the time even hot days are too cold to be out at night) is too bad tbh.

But then I don't sleep until after midnight and work evenings so don't get in until 10pm after sometimes so maybe my view is biased

Tinkerbyebye · 21/08/2023 21:41

I would go back and point out you, and your other neighbours have to get up for work. 11pm is the very latest and anything after that will be reported to environmental health as noise nuisance, and yes I would do just that

AvengedQuince · 21/08/2023 21:56

Both me and my 17 year old (working the summer) are up by 6:30am, noise past 10pm is late for me as I'd want to be asleep soon, teen certainly by midnight.

Flossflower · 21/08/2023 22:16

For the noise act 1996; Night hours are considered to be 11pm to 7am.
I think your neighbours are being inconsiderate.

moderationincludingmoderation · 21/08/2023 22:21

Maybe point out that even some
pubs in residential areas close their beer gardens at 10pm or 10.30pm... so you arent being unreasonable.
