To think a company shouldn't need these details to issue a refund.

Paid £100 to a garage for a car deposit, which we were told would be refunded straight away if we decided we didn't want the car (which we don't now, as we realised as time went on that there were alot of red flags with it)

They took the payment with the usual card details.Have been shifty about answering the phone to us since....First I get told I would get a call from the manager later today to process it (apparently it has to be authorised) didn't happen so DH rung up.No answer (they have always answered on other occasions) until he put 141 in front of his number, then suddenly they answer the phone. They take the Expiry date and CCV?! Surely its the account number and sort code they need to do a refund?!

We havent been too happy with the place tbh, but this is a big multi site company not a small back street garage.

Should I be ringing back and questioning it, or can they actually refund money with those details? Or at least send some sort of confirmation.

The place isn't bloody local either typically, but if they don't do what they said i wouldn't hesitate to go down there and kick up a fuss about it infront of other customers....

I’ve been asked for the CVC for a refund several times, I think if they’re using a virtual terminal to do it then it’s needed.

Notveryanything · 21/08/2023 17:44

Yes I had to ring for a refund for something this morning and was asked for those details. It's standard I think.

What annoys me is that they say it will be 7-10 days before money is in my account. Why so long? I doubt they would wait that long if someone was buying something. And anyway aren't bank transactions instant these days?

Frabbits · 21/08/2023 17:47

If they are refunding back onto a card then yeah, often they will need those details. Why would they want bank account no?

rainbowunicorn · 21/08/2023 17:47

If the original payment was by card then it will be the card that they refund to, so yes they may well need the expiry and CVC number.

LumpyPumpkin · 21/08/2023 17:49

If you paid by card they will be refunding your card transaction, not sending a bank transfer, so they have no need for your bank account number or sort code.

Well oftennthey do wait that long when someone is buying something. That's how it works. It's not the company that you made the purchase from that controls the length of time the refund takes to hit your account once they have processed it. It is the banking system.

It’s a security check

Mummyof287 · 21/08/2023 17:58

If you paid on a card it will be refunded to a card so yes they definitely need that information.

It isn’t a bank transfer it is a card transaction. My job requires me to sometimes take card payments over the phone and I also receive the bank statements. I would say it is about five days between taking a card payment and it coming into the bank, so 7-10 days is probably just a bit of a buffer, allowing for weekend / bank holidays or whatever. I have never done a refund so don’t know how long that takes.

Thanks @rainbowunicorn that makes sense.
