Dog dander allergy

I love dogs but unfortunately I have a horrible allergy to dog dander, even the dogs which are meant to be non allergenic. I booked a hotel for a weekend break away for my DH birthday before I realised it was a pet friendly hotel. I usually check but was busy at work and in a rush.It was only afterwards having paid with the non refundable option a colleague asked me if I checked I could have a pet free room (the least bit of dander in an enclosed space can set me off with streaming itchy swollen eyes) I phoned the hotel to ask if I could have a pet free room. The reply was we cannot guarantee this and they wouldn’t offer me a refund. I realise it’s my own fault but to be refused a refund so I could book another hotel is what is annoying me the most. AIBU to expect them to make exceptions in their policies for this type of situation.

If your allergies are that bad then the onus is on you to check before you book, imo, though it would have been nice if they refunded you as a goodwill gesture.

No they should not refund you.

If you have an allergy the onus is on you when you book to address any problems, not after.

Have you looked on their website to see what their terms and conditions are regarding refunds?

I think it's your mistake for not checking that it was pet free. If your allergy is that bad surely that's the first thing you check? I have dogs so when I go on holiday I always check that the accommodation is pet friendly and how many dogs they accept.

I agree with reply’s onus on me. It’s the lack of consideration for a genuine problem which annoyed me. This is my only allergy and it’s not serious, just uncomfortable.

But you didn't consider the problem either because you didn't check the hotel was suitable before booking Confused

Problem solved. I called the hotel again and spoke to the duty manager. His attitude was totally different to the receptionist. He couldn’t offer me a refund but he said they have specific rooms they offer to pet owners and he would ensure we were given priority for the pet free rooms 😁 He also said the receptionist should have told me this so no doubt he will be having a word in her ear.
