To let 4 year old use a stroller on holiday?

4 year old hasn't used a buggy in over a year but uses a buggy board on his baby siblings buggy. We aren't bringing the big buggy on holiday and are just hiring a stroller from our resort for our infant, so we can't use the buggy board. I want to hire a second stroller so that if 4 year old inevitably doesn't want to walk everywhere, gets too hot, is tired, wants a nap etc without us having to go back to the room has somewhere to sit down and have a nap or a bit of quiet time? I pick the easiest path for us all to have a nice time

My husband however seems horrified by the idea - 4yo is too old, needs to walk more, doesn't nap at home so won't need on holidays etc. I said if he doesn't fancy being back in our room by 7pm every night then he will want him to nap but apparently he'll manage fine as he does at home.

Just after opinions really - who is right here? Surely a 4 year old using a stroller sometimes for 10 days on holiday to make our lives easier is no big deal? AIBU?

Definitely do it! We were umming and ahhing over this one year. At the last minute we threw the buggy in. Dd was ill for the whole holiday. Coughing all night and then sleeping all day (pre covid). Without the buggy we would have had no holiday, with the buggy we'd be out and she was asleep in it all day- reclined with hood up. Also it will free you up in the evenings.

Do it. I had a similar argument about taking a pushchair for a nearly 5 year old to Disney. Best decision I could have made - it carried the bags through the day and a sleeping child at the end of it! Holiday tiredness hits differently to at home tiredness.

Yanbu.

Do it.

The only reason you wouldn't is in case people judge and as those people are idiots, that would be a silly reason.

Every holiday I’ve been on, resort type All
inclusive has had young children, 3/4/5 in strollers of an evening having a nap whilst parents ate/enjoyed the night life. I’d be inclined to get a double buggy. If he doesn’t use it great for the bags, better safe than sorry. It’s different abroad, the heat, the swimming/running around all day. He will be tired come evening time and it allows you to still enjoy the area. Id get the buggy, if he’s used to the buggy board at home why would your DH think he’ll be happy to go without this and walk more in a hot country? Sage the headache and get the buggy

It's sooo handy! Absolutely do it! I did similar when DC was 4. Was great to be able to shove beach bags in when carrying loads of stuff. DC could have a nap on the beach if they wanted to. We could go out to dinner and when DC had had enough, they could hop in their buggy with iPad while we had a lovely evening.

If it was normal life I would agree with your DH. On holiday do whatever is easiest.

Yes it’s fine.
My 3 year old doesn’t use one often, but I’m 100% packing travel pram for next trip.

We have trip booked next year already when he will be 4 And I’m sure we will take it still. We wedding to attend and if he’s tired from travel and long day, I don’t see the problem with him being taken for a walk to sleep and then parked back up near us to snooze.

Travel kids are often in gets they aren’t used to or out of routine. It’s handy for luggage, and to carry stuff around even if it’s only used to sit in 10% of the time

It would never have crossed my mind to even consider a buggy for an almost school age child!
I live in a Perthshire village, and we expect four year olds to manage to climb 2,000 ft hills with us. Modern city children seem to get totally inadequate exercise to develop their hearts, lungs and muscles. No wonder so many are obese.

Do you also do 10 days of early mornings full day trips and late nights?

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 22/08/2023 10:01

I brought a buggy for a 4 year old that had not used one since probably last summer.
I ended up pushing both him and his 5 yr old sister around in it. Both my kids are usually very active but I think late at night the buggy can seem safer in unfamiliar places for children. I would book the buggy

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 22/08/2023 10:01

I absolutely would (and did) this at that age. And I wouldn't bat an eye at seeing a young child in a stroller on holiday. The heat, swimming, activities etc. all tire them out much more than they would be at home. It just makes everything so much easier if they can climb into the stroller when tired.

Are you having a laugh?

I used a buggy for dc when age 4. Luckily I never had to travel with one with the properties we rented always seemed to have one. So handy for being out in the evenings and dc could jump in and sleep/ rest.

Mindymomo · 22/08/2023 10:07

We went on holiday with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. First day I hired a single pushchair for the 3 year old, but 5 year old wanted to get in, so after that I hired double buggies. It’s so much easier letting them rest when they want than trying to get them to walk. If we were lucky both would be asleep whilst we had lunch.
