Inconsiderate listening

I'm finding an increased amount of people listening to devices when in public. Currently at the Doctors and a woman is listening to something (in a different country so no idea what) on her phone. No headphones, total lack of consideration to others in the waiting room.

Went for a meal yesterday at lunchtime and a family sat down next to us with a three/four year old. Almost immediately he was given an iPhone to watch cartoons - no headphones. So AIBU for finding this really annoying.

No you're not. It's rude and obnoxious.

Elizabethwalton · 21/08/2023 09:27

It's so annoying I agree

I usually tell them to wear headphones 😂 it is really inconsiderate.

It happens more and more frequently, particularly on public transport.

On holiday recently and a toddler was watching some show on their DMs phone at the front of the bus. I was at the back so could hear the whole thing. DM was beaming round the bus like she was some patron saint of modern parenting. I get it was better than a tantrum, but toddlers have good hearing so it shouldn't be so damn loud.

Also quite a few instances lately of middle aged people watching their Tv shows on the bus with the sound on. I say middle aged because I wouldn't be as surprised to see this behaviour in teenagers but feel people my age should know better.

I'm tempted to buy a stock of cheap headphones and hand them out to the worst offenders.

No, YANBU.

And when I’ve been subjected to this sort of rudeness I do castigate myself for not having the guts to ask the rude person to use some headphones.

Why are we so reluctant to ask people to be considerate?

Can anyone offer tips on how to do it politely?

We were once on a tiny plane and the guy next to DH started watching some kind of fight at full volume on his phone. The guy was huge - massive muscles but apologised profusely when DH said 'do you mind?' It appeared it hadn't crossed his mind that it would bother anybody else. I don't get it at all.

@Spongeeater that's the weird thing, I've seen unassuming people on the bus doing it - there's usually a particular East European lady on a certain bus listening to some show. She seems perfectly normal. But to me it's massively impolite to impose my noise on others.
