DH chasing solicitor constantly, I think we leave them alone to do their job!

We are selling a property, and solicitors are doing their job fine I feel. It’s slow but these things always are! However, DH is very impatient and wants it done yesterday, so he is chasing them daily with emails, calls etc.

YABU - (DH is right) solicitor needs chasing or they forget you and go slow
YANBU - (you are right) Leave them alone - solicitor will get the job done quicker if they don’t have to deal with DH’s messages

Good point, I need to check whether he’s pushing the bill up by calling them and taking extra time.
thanks all, I think once a week is reasonable.

Yes,every contact with the solicitor is chargeable be it phone ,letter or email.

You should chase at least weekly, but any more than that is pointless.

A lot of conveyancing time is waiting for responses on surveys and enquiries for the relevant searches (eg. Environmental search reports) and those are dependent on other agencies replying. Also waiting on contracts from the other side or waiting for the other side to respond to standard queries. Waiting for confirmation and paperwork from mortgage company etc. Those all take time, and varying amounts of time.

We always go with a fixed-rate, no completion, no fee, via our conveyancing broker.

If we're having problems, our broker kicks the conveyancers' arse (because she brings in a lot of business for them) and there's no nonsense like charging for letters or calls.

It’s all very well to say if you chase, they just spend time managing your chasing rather than getting on with it. But every time I’ve bought a house (except the first time when I was 19 and had no clue so trusted the solicitor and it took 5 months with no chain) it has been an endless round of:

  • estate agent chases buyer, vendor is impatient
  • buyer chases solicitor
  • solicitor says they’re waiting for X from the other side
  • buyer tells estate agent that
  • estate agent says no, vendor’s solicitor did that last week, here’s the proof
  • solicitor mysteriously finds that it has “just come in this minute”
  • repeat x100

If, as the buyer, you just sit back and allow your solicitor a week in between each bit of action, you’ll be there months. It’s a horrible process and nobody is on your side. Including your solicitor, who quite clearly doesn’t give a shit and knows you are completely powerless so fuck you.
