3 week bin collections

Desiredeffect · 21/08/2023 00:03

The council last year made it so our general waste is only collected every 3 weeks and recycling every week. Does anyone else have this. I think it's not a good idea as by the time the bin comes to be emptied it stinks. I recycle to but feel 3 weekly collections is ridiculous

We've had collections every 3 weeks for a few years. The food bin is every 2 weeks and we get maggots in it every summer. We got larger recycling bins free from the council and bought a larger general waste bin several years ago before all the recycling bins were brought in.

My biggest problem with 3 weekly collections is that sometimes I forget to put the bin out (or am on holiday or something) and then it would be 6w between collections? Does everyone else have perfect memories or how do you deal with this?

I write the bin collections on my kitchen calendar when I get my new calendar at Christmas. We have 4 bins: 3 on a 3 weekly cycle and 1 every 2 weeks so it's the only way we put the correct bin out.

Caspianberg · 21/08/2023 12:30

We are overseas. It’s every 4 weeks for general waste. Paper, metal and plastic are 6 weeks. Glad w shave to take to local communal glass bins

Tbh we have never really found it a problem. We compost all that can be composted. Have very little other food waste, and used washable nappies for Ds as I far prefer washing and having everything fresh to 4 weeks of disposable in bin.
Any food waste shouldn’t get maggots if it’s not exposed to flies first. So keep indoor and outdoor bins sealed.

After 4 weeks our general waste bin is only 1/4-1/2 full ( we have 3-7 people living here depending)

faw2009 · 21/08/2023 12:36

Discard less waste.
Some things like plastic wrapping can be recycled in supermarkets.
Freeze food waste until collection.
Compact you rubbish/recycling. E.g. fold crisp pockets instead of scrunching. Amazing how much space can be saved by compacting.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/08/2023 12:40

I'm lucky as we have a weekly food waste collection. General rubbish is fortnightly, and glass/plastic and paper/card also fortnightly, alternating. I live in my own and don't seem to have much, and didn't really even when married with a family.

I also don't have, and have never had, a wheelie bin. Just the old school small dustbin 😁 My council provides the food waste caddy and the two recycling boxes, but we have to pay for our own bins, bin bags, and food recycling bags.

Lovehearts82 · 21/08/2023 12:47

We have 3 weekly waste bin collections, I always have an extra bag to go out and we recycle. I've got an extra large plastic storage box I brought for the overflow of any bin bags.
Food waste/paper, card/plastics collected weekly.
Nappy collectioned weekly if you register, they give you big yellow sacks.
I wish the bin was collected more frequently, although it isn't as bad as the previous County I lived was 4 weekly collections, that was a nightmare.

Harlechchick · 21/08/2023 12:48

We live in Wales, and our general waste wheelie bin is collected 4 weekly, and the recycling containers every week. The recycling is excellent, I have to say. Basically, soft plastics (wrappers/bags etc) are the only things not collected!
I think the 4 weekly general waste bin does start to get pongy, but we only detect the smell when the lid is lifted. We have to store it fairly close to an open window and it definitely doesn't 'release' the odour whilst closed, even in direct high winds!
So it all depends on what the recycling service is provided, I'd say.
If all food/hard plastics/tins/bottles/cardboard/paper/incontinence pad & nappies (yes, there is a separate bin collected for these too!) are collected, there is very little else to make a general waste bin smell!

CoffeeCantata · 21/08/2023 12:56

We only have one bag of rubbish per week (and a small, loose one at that). I really don't mean to sound so smug, honest, but what are you putting in the bin? We only have cellophane and a bit of paper that's too dirty to recycle.

Otherwise it's food bin/compost heap or recycling. There shouldn't be much organic matter in the general bin, should there? At least it's not allowed round our way.

CreeperBoom · 21/08/2023 12:59

ReviewingTheSituation · 21/08/2023 10:55

Food packaging gets rinsed and put in the recycling, surely? If you have a dishwasher, then bung plastic trays in there. If not, a quick rinse takes seconds. Same for tins - just rinse out when you use them and put them in the recycling.

Yeah, I do wash plastic. I was thinking more cardboard. I am finding more places are using less plastic, which is great. But as a result you get cardboard boxes of soup/sauce, pizza boxes, etc, which can't be washed but are covered in food.

ChilliNoodleGoodness · 21/08/2023 13:02

We have this here. I recycle everything I can along with my food waste and only use on average, 1 black bag

@CreeperBoom are those meant to go in your cardboard bin? Ours specifically states that things such as pizza boxes with grease etc on the cardboard are non-recyclable. We use general waste for that

Haruka · 21/08/2023 14:03

Glass, metal and plastic is something I only put the bin out for every 6-8 weeks.

My paper bin is always full (I work in a very paper-based job with lots of material from home, which doesn't help matters) and goes out every 2 weeks.

General waste stretches to every 4 weeks if I'm careful, but we don't have food waste collections here, so you run the risk of maggots in summer.

We're in a decent council where services run every 2 weeks and my own household of 3 can stretch to most things being collected up to every 4, but I have at least one set of neighbours (4 people) whose bins are always overflowing at collection dates. So much depends on lifestyle, though I agree that we all should be doing far more to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place.

FOJN · 21/08/2023 14:16

Generally waste bin is emptied every 3 weeks.
Recycling every week which includes separate containers for tin/plastic, glass/cardboard and food waste.
Garden waste is emptied every 2 weeks but you have to pay £50 per year for garden waste collection. You can have more than one garden waste bin but have to pay £50 for each one.

I don't have any nappies and only fill one 30L kitchen bin liner every 3 weeks so my bin doesn't smell and there are no maggots. I'm surprised by how little rubbish I make. I put the food caddy out each week but the rest of the recycling only goes out once every 3 weeks with general waste.

FOJN · 21/08/2023 14:17

And you can sign up for alerts so you get a notification the night before collection day telling you which bins are being collected the following day.

rwalker · 21/08/2023 14:54

I was out at fortnightly but with a bit of effort and separating stuff properly 4 of us bin often 1/2 full
found using wheelie bin liners and throwing stuff in unbagged helped

HTmmm · 21/08/2023 15:03

My family has had general waste collected every 4 weeks for years. There's a separate food waste and nappy collection.

So I'm not one of the ones filling my wheelie bin to the brim, but it does have a fair few bags in when it's collected monthly. I agree there shouldn't be all that much, but things I can think of going in ours are nappies/wipes (we use some reusable but probably at least half disposable), endless tissues from hayfever, colds brought home from school, etc, discarded craft projects brought home from school (most can't be recycled due to being covered in glitter, googly eyes, acrylic paint, that sort of thing), kitchen roll (not much as I mainly use cloths but DH doesn't), non-recyclable wrappers like the thin yoghurt pot lids or cellophane, sweet/chocolate/biscuit wrappers, fruit packaging like the nets the oranges/garlic/onions come in, packaging from frozen food like bags of frozen veg or chips...it seems to add up eventually even though we're fairly low waste overall (e.g. we have no packaging from pasta, lentils, raisins, rice, nuts, porridge oats, etc. as I buy these at a refill shop).

Youdontsay87 · 21/08/2023 16:47

We're a family of 5 and have 2 large bins that are full and overflowing within 2 weeks and 2 smaller recycling bins against full and overflowing by 2 weeks. This would never work for us.

clary · 21/08/2023 16:50

Just to flag, those of you with full bins, you can take soft plastics (crisp wrappers, cello from fruit and veg) to Tesco or Aldi to recycle.

We now have about a bag every fortnight in our black bin, plus dust from the hoover. Four-five people. No nappies or craft but even so, I do wonder somewhat what ppl are putting in their giant bins.

Yes, I forgot to say in my earlier post, we always take our soft plastics to Tesco/Aldi etc when we go. So even less in the 'big bin' 🤣. I think if they emptied it every 12 weeks we'd get by - except it really would pong by then 🤢

thatsn0tmyname · 21/08/2023 17:03

Maggotastic.

Showdogworkingdog · 21/08/2023 17:17

My rubbish and recycling are collected alternate weeks.Four adults and a dog in my house and I fill two wheelie bins to capacity every fortnight. The rubbish bin is rarely more than half full every fortnight, unless I’ve had a clear out. No food collection yet but it looks like one is coming for everyone, if there was, my rubbish bin would just be bags of dog shit and food packaging that’s not recyclable. I’d be ok with three weekly. We just can’t keep burying stuff in the ground and council finances, like every other public service, have been run into the ground.

Desiredeffect · 21/08/2023 23:28

I cannot really reduce more than I am. I pay like everyone else council tax and I expect a good service. I have a disabled dd and is in adult pull ups and rang the council today and wanted a clinical waste collection and they agreed finally

Our general waste is every 3 weeks too
Food waste and recycling every week

brewmeanother · 21/08/2023 23:48

YANBU, we have this now and have had bad smells and fly infestations every year in the summer since we have had it changed. We clean our bins but can't say the same for the neighbours. I hate it and have complained to the council. Food waste is every 2 or 3 weeks and the flies breed in there. Its awful.
