Putting rubbish in a public bin

HippyPippy · 20/08/2023 22:18

Someone I know regularly puts a carrier bag or two in a public bin. It’s because her bun is always full and she doesn’t want to put the dog waste in her own bin.

She has said that sometimes people driving by will give her dirty looks and beep their horn as if she’s doing something wrong?

I personally wouldn’t bat an eyelid if I saw someone putting rubbish in a bin, but it got me thinking whether others think this is wrong and if so why?

If you are a vegetarian how can you justify owning a cat?

Cat and dog owners often claim to care about animals, despite sponsoring slaughterhouses for rabbits, chickens, lambs and cows. 🙄

@granstablecan you please elaborate?! 😆As a veggie and non-pet owner, I’m still mainly bemused by this comment.

How would they know where you live 🤷🏻‍♀️

Because they find your name/address in with the waste you dumped.

Now I’ve read how proud people are of illegally dumping their waste in public bins I understand why there is constantly piles of fly tipped rubbish everywhere at our local park etc.

This thread is Mumsnet at its most batshit I've ever seen!
😂😂😂😂

God do people seriously care what other people put in the bins 🙄😳🤣🤣🤣

TidyDancer · 20/08/2023 23:11

It is definitely fly tipping and councils can and do fine for it.

LooselyBasedOnAMadeUpStory · 20/08/2023 23:12

@Lilithlogic does the council not collect cardboard with the recycling?

HippyPippy · 20/08/2023 23:12

The litter bins in our area are regularly emptied and have a large slot on the side like a letterbox. The bins are labelled ‘litter and dog waste’. It is mainly dog waste - she has 3 dogs and picks up the poo in a poo bag ties it and keeps them on her garden wall then every few days fills a carrier bag to take to one of the public bins.

It’s definitely not fly tipping. I understand if the bins were overflowing meaning others couldn’t use it, but she’s said this isn’t the case. I guess some people just have an issue with it for some reason.

If they are filling open litter bins with nappies, then yes.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/08/2023 23:14

I do because otherwise we get maggots when it's hot, public bin emptied daily, mine is every three weeks and I don't see maggot washing as a fun activity

I don’t dump any letters! I only dump food

It depends on the council

You only get maggots if you let flies lay eggs on it. Maggots don't spontaneously generate 😁

and here

Obviously only if you live in Hinckley or Boston.

Where do you live that the public bins are emptied daily? Our are weekly or fortnightly depending on whether they are in the town or local.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/08/2023 23:16

@Redebs they're getting in somehow

apparently it’s not possible to get maggots 🤣

Ponderingwindow · 20/08/2023 23:18

It gets really hot where we live and we are legally required to keep the bins in the garage. The smell can become awful. I have been known to pop meat waste in the freezer and save it until bin day to throw out.

dirty diapers should be tipped and flushed before they are folded and binned.

I'm not posting every link from my Google search. Pretty much every council in the country has something to the effect of 'don't put household waste in the public bins or you risk a fine' on their website.

Moveoverdarlin · 20/08/2023 23:19

I get maggots in my wheelie bin every summer.

ElEmEnOhPee · 20/08/2023 23:19

Ours are collected every 3 weeks here and it's a fucking nightmare, I was ill last bin collection so overslept and missed it, what am I meant to do with 6 weeks of rubbish bags when I don't drive?! Thankfully my sisters partner took them to the tip for me but not everyone has someone who can do it. Mine get full because of my cat litter. I have a food waste caddy but as soon as I started using it I had rats everywhere so don't use it any more.

I have a public bin about a 2 minute walk from my front door, I have used it on occasion but food waste I usually lob in the freezer until bin day then stick it in the bins, that way I haven't got it festering for 3 weeks.

I recycle absolutely everything I can, I donate a lot of things I don't need and I have a glass collection point same distance as public bin so use that for glass and still I have about 4 black bags full by the end of 3 weeks, I don't know where I'm going wrong! I don't blame people for using public bins. Black bags used to be collected weekly, then every two weeks which is fine but every 3 weeks is taking the piss especially in summer.

HobbiddoH · 20/08/2023 23:21

She must be putting quite a large amount of waste in for passing cars to notice

Ours are every 3 weeks as well. They have been for about 10 years now.

Have you tried to ring up the council to see whether you're able to get a bigger wheelie bin? Maybe it's worth a try.

Dartmoorcheffy · 20/08/2023 23:24

Our general waste is collected fortnightly but recycling and food waste is weekly.if you do this you should barely have any general waste anyway.

I don't use a wheelie bin, I've got two big black dustbins but just leave the black bags out for the bin men. Neighbours all do the same, wheelie bins would be pinched in two seconds flat here sadly.
