Spider season

Has anyone else got massive spiders????

I've been in tears for the past 30 minutes, we moved here in January and this is the worst house I've ever lived in for spiders.

In the past week we've had 6 HUGE ones, 2 have run on me and tonight one ran across the floor so big that it made my dog jump.

I can't cope, I'm a nervous wreck, I can barely sleep. Can anyone give me any advice? I'm severely arachnophobic but I've never had this many in any previous properties. It's really affecting my life.

Conkers. Don’t listen to the non believers.

thatsn0tmyname · 20/08/2023 21:48

MIL puts conkers around the house as a deterrent. Old wives tale but worth a try.

freetheunicorn1 · 20/08/2023 21:49

Peppermint spray round doors and windows

MidlandCatGirl · 20/08/2023 21:50

I also say conkers. I recently discovered a massive tree near my house with loads of them just a few weeks away from being ready and dropping. When that time happens I’m there and stocking up!

Forwardthinkinglobster · 20/08/2023 21:52

No big spiders (yet!) but SO many little ones in every room… which will probably grow into the massive ones 😱

Flo84 · 20/08/2023 21:53

No More Spider spray. I spray all around the windows, doors, plug holes and anywhere else that I think they might get in. It seems to work well for our house.

Upandonward · 20/08/2023 21:53

As pp said, peppermint spray around all windows and doors regularly as they hate the smell. Buy a spider catcher-thingy.

Curlycurls23 · 02/09/2023 17:45

@edie8 I could have written this I paid £300 for pest control in my new place but i still cant cope!!

Mrburnshound · 02/09/2023 17:59

If you can pay the money a friendly spider course at your nearest opportunity will change your life. I went to the London zoo one and there were people who had booked hotels etc to go to it.

I've gone from jibbering wreck to honestly unbotherd. A big ish one was in thr pile of clothes I got out of the dryer the other day and I just flicked it off. It's the only thing that worked in my almost 4 decades!

DrasticAction · 02/09/2023 18:00

@Curlycurls23

Out of interest what sort of spiders did pest control work on?

BrawnWild · 02/09/2023 18:04

I was scared 7 years ago and decided not to be as I didnt want to pass the fear on to my son. Which sounds ridiculous but that's the truth.

I told myself they are tiny compared to me and challenged myself to take the smaller ones out and worked up to the larger ones. A big glass or bowl and some card or paper is all you need. You CAN overcome this, i promise.

I told myself I find them interesting, not scary and at first I pretended I was watching someone else take the out and gave a positive narration "look how confident she is, she isnt scared of a small spider"

I really hope that helps as they really are helpful little creatures just trying to live their lives!

@DrasticAction hey they didn't tell me specifically what any were called its just house and garden spiders I guess but they used some sort of tank to exterminate inside and outside my flat the spiders were all different shapes and sizes and they get rid of any eggs larvae and any actual spiders. They look for any spider activity in and outside the home I just had the second treatment you have to leave the house for 3-5 hours but this whole thing is just making me worse its like hell for me seriously. It is working for now - i've gone from dealing with multiple throughout the day to only a couple in the past couple of weeks but just wondering how long it will last etc my brain is just in over drive!

DrasticAction · 02/09/2023 18:10

Interesting! It does sound like their normal number were too high so in sure you will be OK.

Oysterbabe · 02/09/2023 18:11

We've had a few absolute monsters so far too, almost too big to get a glass over them.

Stripeybee · 02/09/2023 18:16

BrawnWild: What a great strategy for coping. I don’t mind spiders but I think I could use your strategy for stuff I find difficult. Thanks!

TheGuv1982 · 02/09/2023 18:16

I’ve seen lots of posts on various social media, so it does seem there’s more big ones that usual this year? I’m gently surprised as it’s not exactly been an insect friendly summer.

Ilinaya · 02/09/2023 18:17

This was my biggest fear about moving.
You need to find out where they are coming from? Do you have wooden floor boards? There must be gaps where they are coming in so try to get them filled.

BellaAndDave · 02/09/2023 18:19

Conkers don’t work. Get yourself Indorex. It works a treat and you won’t see another spider but house will resemble a spider mortuary for a week or so as you’ll find a good few dead ones. It lasts round 6 months.

SpiderExtinction · 02/09/2023 18:20

Yes 😩. I can't stand them, hence my username.

We have had a few big ones in the house. There was one on my daughters wall last night next to her bed and all of a sudden I heard her shout "oh my god....help!!" 😂

We can't even use spider repellent or peppermint spray as it makes our dog have seizures.

Zumarocks · 02/09/2023 18:32

The Indorex on Amazon appears to be flea spray? How do you use it against spiders if you don't mind me asking @BellaAndDave

We moved very rural a few years ago and the house had loads of massive spiders in it. I ended up very ill in hospital with cellulitis and sepsis due to a spider bite. It was our neighbour that recommended it to me and I’ve used it every year since. I spray around all skirtings, doors, window frames inside and out, and vents, it works for up to 12 months.

ImInACage · 02/09/2023 22:21

I second indorex, it kills everything. I spray round the windows, the skirtings and the whole floor. We see dead spiders, but never alive ones now. Apologies spider lovers. I can't bring myself to set them free instead, they just come straight back and I'm terrified of them!

ImInACage · 02/09/2023 22:22

I meant to add that I only spray twice a year at most.
