To be furious family abuser is around children in pics

15 years ago a 'member' of my family (by marriage) sexually abused a child in my blood family. It happened once. He admitted it and went to prison for it. I believe he was put on sex offenders register for life afterwards but I'm not sure as i was not that close to it all... fast forward & today I've seen him in pics on fb at a 'family gathering' where we have a mutual member of the family. There are a few girls there the age of the child he abused. He's posing happily with them. At least 3 other people in the pictures know the history. Maybe he's not 'dangerous' anymore.. I've no idea. But if my child was around someone with the history this guy has, I would like to know. I am so tempted to anonymously call it out somehow on the fb post. Guess I'm posting here to get it out of my system. What would others do??

To update I called MASH team who directed to 101.. explained situation to them & they said they'd report it up to the relevant officer so presume he's still on a list somewhere. They wouldn't divulge that though. Thanks everybody for your advice.

I've heard this happen a few times. Family forgiven, it's like they don't think of them the same as other paedos/perverts.

Well done op.
Hopefully the police follow up if he has restrictions. It makes your skin crawl doesn’t it!!!

Do you know names and addresses for any of the children? Could refer to the social care team in their area if you do. Then could also be picked up as a safeguarding issue, even if he has no restrictions.

Exactly this. 'We need to move forward' Angry

Sadly some family members do enable abusers or are willfully blind to the risk.

Afraid not. We have nothing to do with that side of the family now & as it was years ago, these children are all 'new faces' to me, not sure who they belong to out of those in the pics! I know it sounds awful, but if their 'brush it under the carpet' attitude results in it happening again, then that's up to them.

I think in this case it's because it was horrific but a 'one off' (that we know of) when he was young (late term) - but only emerged years after the event, when his victim had the understanding to reveal it... so they claim he was 'in a bad place' at the time, he's now of 'good character' blah blah. But in my mind, if your formative sexual experiences are with a child then surely there's some kind of ongoing attraction to children there.. I've no idea, can only trust the probation service are on it and have deemed him 'low risk' still, I would want to know if it were my children he was near.

It's unbelievably frustrating but sadly I'm fairly sure if he is "supervised" they will deem it safe!

Supervised is the key word here.

One would hope this is always the case.

Greenshake · 22/08/2023 19:01

Are Probation still supervising this man though?

No idea.. that's my concern. If the 'supervision' is left to the dismissive family, it's useless
