Neighbours and washing lines

Hi all,

We live on an estate of flats and masionettes with shared communal washing lines. It says in the lease that we must hang washing outdoors and this is enforced by fellow residents - this is not a problem for us as we prefer to hang out washing outside anyway.

We have recently been told by a retired neighbour who lives close to the washing lines to not put our washing out overnight because the foxes play with the washing and keep him up. There are a lot of foxes at all times of the day on the estate and an endless number of things they can amuse themselves with. We have hung washing out overnight and never noticed it pulled off or damaged. We do live further away from the washing lines. My partner and I work unusual hours and sometimes we just need to hang our washing out overnight. Today we tried to communicate that we were unfortunately only able to hang it out now, and he then called us selfish and went back into his property. He did not try and agree any compromise or alternative arrangement.

We intend to try our best to hang washing out during the day, but when not possible, to hang it out overnight.

AIBU?

I have never heard of a rule that you cannot dry laundry indoors.

It isn't possible to do that for most of the time in the UK- especially in the winter months.
I am a huge advocate of outdoor drying , but laundry rarely gets 100% dry outside, only during hotter times in the summer.

Much of the time you can get laundry 80% dry, but will still need some time of racks indoors to become dry enough to put away or wear.

How is this rule enforced?
Are you supposed to put clean damp clothes back into the wardrobe?

All sounds bonkers.

Every Mumsnetter knows, if you leave your washing out at night it will get darked on.

And spiders will rub their willies on it. All. Night. Long.

PrtScn · 20/08/2023 20:01

Are you actually in the UK? As it quite frequently rains overnight here and the wind can be quite bad. No chance I'd risk putting my washing out overnight. Besides it being darked on and rubbed with spider willies, the dew point is usually quite high in the early hours so runs the risk of just being damp, and I don't fancy one of my bras ending up in he neighbours hedge again.

I've never left washing out overnight, surely it gets damp in the morning dew?

First of all, I'd ignore the neighbour. If you want/need to leave it hanging out overnight just do so.
But secondly, what the absolute fuck is this rule about having to hang washing outdoors and it being enforced by fellow residents.
What the fuck are you supposed to do when it's pissing down with rain for 5 days on end? Or in the winter when it's fucking freezing?
I know you keep saying you prefer to hang the washing outside - well I do too - but if it's raining constantly it has to get hung up indoors.

Anyone looking through my window to see if I am hanging up washing would get short shrift from me.
It's a totally ridiculous rule.
Fuck that!

I'm not sure what to maje of this thread . But oh well 😁.

Op are you allowed tumble dryers?

Anyway dry your washing when you want .
Alsodry your washing inside when you want. What they going to do spit their false teeth out at you

Meaning what?

Flossflower · 20/08/2023 20:42

In the summer I leave my washing out overnight all the time and so do my neighbours on both sides. In hot climates people hang coloured clothes out overnight so the sun doesn’t bleach the colour out.
I think you just have a neighbour that likes to make rules for everyone else. Tell him/her to get something that makes a noise to scare the foxes away.
We have foxes near us but they never play with my washing.

Ooh! I've just learned something new, that some people hang their washing out at night! I've never hung washing out overnight, ever! That seems very odd, to me, as the air is always very moisture-laden once the sun has set (unless you live in a desert, maybe).

This is as much of a revelation to me as it was when I found out (on here) that some people wear knickers under their pyjamas in bed and some people wash their towels after a single use!

Hanging out washing overnight is new to me too! I've occasionally left it if we've been out or forgotten but then it feels damp in the morning!

I do wear knickers to bed though 😂

We leave ours out for up to several days, either because its not dry or because we dont find the time. Its under the roof though, on the balcony.
