To think there should be noise restrictions of a Sunday

NDN uses Saturday and Sunday for tinkering jobs week in week out which usually mean something outside (mowing, jet washing, car tinkering, hammering, all with loud talking) - today for instance theyve been at something or other involving hammering, revving and shouting since 9am out front and back and im a bit demented

Appreciate the weekend is the only time most of us have to do things but IABU to thijk there should be a limit on noise on Sundays?

I'm sure some European countries have this, I used to visit a friend frequently on the continent and remember his dad trying to get jobs like mowing done in the morning as from noon or something it was "quiet" time.

My AIBU is am I wrong to think we should have the same here

Nope. We're not Germany.

Well, some of the 'we' who read this might well be in Germany, or other European countries for that matter! I have read/watched quite a bit about the German attitude to quiet times on Sundays, and it has good and bad points imho.

Why no hanging out laundry on a Sunday?
I would love restrictions on children screaming.

We have quite laws were we live.
All day Sunday, and 12-2 every day. No noisy stuff is supposed to take place. Including not using hoover or washing machine even in some blocks of flats if they have that rule.

Its a bit annoying. All shops are also closed every Sunday so it means we have to get all shopping, garden stuff like lawn or noises diy all done on Saturday. But I’m kind of used to it now, and it is nice to know sunday can be a relaxed day in garden with bed with no noise from others. Plus we are forced to have ‘ day of rest’ as can’t do much else

You're in Switzerland is my guess 😁

Where I am in the UK there are local by-laws restricting the use of power tools or noisy equipment, including lawnmowers, before 8am on a Saturday and 9am on a Sunday and the noise has to stop by a certain time too. No one really follows it, most people are just reasonable about when they're using them but the rules are there if someone was making a nuisance of it.

PriamFarrl · 20/08/2023 15:19

I agree on the engine revving, that drives me crackers.
I’m sat in my garden now and I’d swap the sound of a lawn mower for shitty music and next door screaming at her children.

SequinsandStiIettos · 20/08/2023 15:20

The OP is talking about the UK honest lady. Ruhezeit is no picnic precisely because it does impinge on everything you do when living in a flat. Add neurodivergent children to the mix and you'd understand why I'm not thrilled at the idea of it ever being introduced in the UK.

Yanbu. I was very close to being a Netflix documentary recently because of someone few houses down having a hobby involving a freaking electric saw. The big one. Every and all Sunday.
Thoughts and prayers wherever he moved.

I think some restrictions would be good. People are very not considerate lately. Lockdown drilling is a topic itself

We have a similar neighbour, doesn’t live next door but the sound of his electric saw penetrates your skull EVERY WEEKEND!

MaybeSmaller · 20/08/2023 15:23

Any jobs I can't get done myself on a Sunday will have to be done by tradesmen during the week, and you'll have to listen to their music and banter as well.

Waving across the border 👋🏻😁

9am is hardly unsociably early is it? And while Sunday used to traditionally be a 'day of rest' that's just not the case in today's modern world. Like a previous poster has said, a large proportion of the population either work Sundays or some sort of shift pattern these days & their 'peaceful, lie-in day' may well be mid-week but I bet they get disturbed earlier than 9am by their neighbours, going about their day!!

AvengedQuince · 20/08/2023 16:00

I might be annoyed before 8am but 9am is mid morning already. I don't see any difference between Saturday and Sunday, if you were religious wouldn't you be at church Sunday morning?

Gnomegnomegnome · 20/08/2023 16:46

@MXVIT Why Sunday though?
Why not Saturday if it has to be on a weekend?

In the countries that do have these rules what about farmers and factories?

The farms near us are far louder than a lawnmower and obviously they have to do it (I don’t mind the noise, it’s much better than living near people).

Caspianberg · 20/08/2023 17:36

@Gnomegnomegnome - I don’t think farmers or factories ever work on a Sunday here. I don’t think they are allowed to either. We live rural and I haven’t ever seem farmers out in fields at all on Sundays even without machinery. It’s seem as a day to rest.
