To alter my engagement ring?

So I completely appreciate that this is a controversial topic and that I am in a privileged position to even be writing this during these times, but I would love some help/advice on this.

I have a 0.75ct pear engagement ring in platinum. I have a 1.2ct 7 stone wedding band in platinum.

My husband has suggested upgrading/adding to my engagement ring by adding a second stone (still to be decided stone shape), to reflect where we are 10 years on and the one child we have been blessed with.

When speaking with the jeweller they have advised that it would need to be a whole new band to have the 2 stones together, we couldn't simply add a new stone to the existing band.

The thought of this makes me so sad! I would love an additional stone but feel sad that the original band couldn't be kept. They have advised not sensible to melt the original band into a new one - something to do with the properties and can create holes (I have no clue!).

I guess what I'm asking is, is it the band that's the sentimental part or just the stone?

AIBU to worry simply changing the band or about this altogether?

Would really welcome your thoughts or stories if you have altered/changed your engagement ring!

There is no right answer to your question, only you know what is sentimental to you! Just do what feels right for you.

Why dont you have an eternity ring with the stone instead ?

This.

Why not go for a third ring with three stones to symbolise you, your dh and your dc?

@DustyLee123 my wedding band was actually an eternity ring (from that section) so don't know if another would look a bit much?

@Izzabellasasperella i absolutely love that idea, what a lovely thought - thank you so much I hadn't thought of that and would be so sentimental!

I'd just buy a second engagement ring.

My MIL has her original engagement ring, and the "upgrade" she got for their 25th wedding anniversary. I have my mother's original engagement ring and the one that DP gave me (which we chose together). We both just alternate them.

I would also look at lab grown diamonds. Much better value for money and can be much more ethical.

Or second hand/"preloved", as the mark up on new diamonds is ridiculous, and you pay no VAT on second hand.

On a side note, if anyone is interested in lab grown diamonds, there is a documentary on Netflix called "Nothing Lasts Forever" which is well worth a watch.

I have three rings currently (will be getting a fourth for DC2). My engagement ring, wedding ring and a ring with DC1s birthstone.

Would something like that work?
