Random Veg and other MN food madness.

MN is bonkers about food.

It's either over or under eaters. Always competitive.

So much random veg, usually in pasta dishes.

Also 'bulking out' with veg. I'm not sure why a dish needs 'bulking out'.

And it's always either 'I eat 1,000 dounuts' or 'all sugar is dreadful'.

I absolutely understand that we're all different. I get that.

I don't see people that eat seasonally and sensibly. Enjoy food. Properly.

Actually enjoy food.

I don't see much of that.

It’s probably because most people who eat ‘normally’ and have a healthy relationship with food don’t really think that much about it and so don’t tend to comment on the types of threads that get competitive (in either direction).
Also, the more extreme examples tend to stick in your mind. A lot of those threads (e.g. ‘how much pizza would you eat’ from earlier this week) have a lot of answers that fall within normal. However the ones where people give very extreme answers tend to get more attention and comments and so you’re more like to notice/remember them.

’Bulking out with veg’ is just a way of getting more vegetables into your diet (probably a good thing for most people), adding extra flavour/texture and making food go further (meaning meals are cheaper). It’s usually suggested on threads where people are looking for ideas to either cut food costs or make their meals a bit healthier/more interesting. It’s not a particularly interesting or revolutionary suggestion but it’s pretty reasonable so I’m not sure why you’re bothered by it.

The threads where people just suggest normal recipes that they enjoy and cook regularly don’t tend to be in AIBU or trending. But if you look in the ‘food’ section there are loads of threads where people recommend perfectly normal meals that work well for them and their families (e.g. ‘quick mid week meals’, ‘ideas for veggie dinners’, ‘favourite slow cooker recipes’ etc).

I generally enjoy food threads on MN because they attract people who have skewed relationships with food.

And as you say, far too many weirdos who insist on adding sweetcorn and peppers and random veg to a roast dinner where it has no business being.

RitzyMcFitzy · 19/08/2023 22:32

'I generally avoid' that should have said.

Galiana · 19/08/2023 22:34

@Monkeymonkeymoo, you are clearly a bonkers food person.

You get it @RitzyMcFitzy!

If you had grown as many runner beans as I have this year, you'd be adding them to random meals too.

Galiana · 19/08/2023 22:43

Just wrote a long rejoinder!

Runner beans? Don't grow those fuckers. They are easy to grow. I have a bag this week in my vegetable box, they are being slimly sliced in a salad niscoise.

Also 'bulking out' with veg. I'm not sure why a dish needs 'bulking out'. to fill people up and get veg in them?

Galiana · 19/08/2023 22:55

@panko.

I get that.

But if people can afford vegetables, and meat.

Why 'bulk it out'.

Why not just make a dish that is more centered to the vegetables you have and add a little meat.

Not make a meat dish that is 'bulked out' with various vegetables.

Maybe most people are terrible cooks?

Why the bulking?
