It seems that so many opportunities are limited to minority applicants. My children and I find programs they would like to apply to, only to find out that applications are limited to black and minority applicants. Two recent examples include internships at GCHQ and a really generous and exciting associate scheme at the English National Ballet (which by the way seems to also exclude Chinese applicants?), but we’ve come across many more in recent years.
Other opportunities may not explicitly bar white children/young people from applying in the way that these two examples do, but will often emphasise diversity as an express goal. The (non academic) field where one dc is active is aiming to completely overhaul the demographic of its participants which is having an impact on admissions, as 50% of places are earmarked for minorities. A friend’s dc recently had to rethink her future as 100% of places in a work experience she needed for her future studies were for minorities - I admit I don’t have the full details of this.
I fully accept that this is the reality - but is this less common than our recent experiences would suggest? Maybe we’ve just happened to come across a higher than average number of these types of admissions criteria?
Curious to hear from everyone else so that I can understand how common this practice actually is.
