Anyone help me find a job? A desperate plea

I’m in work, and honestly this is not the job I applied for, I’ve been swapped around to a project that is the polar opposite of the job I applied for. I’ve voiced this, and it’s been met with shrugs. Gender pay gap is huge HR did some sort of investigation and women are basically paid 10k per year less in some cases (I’m one of them) not to worry though, in 5 years they’ll sort the problem.

yes I’m lucky to have a job etc and I’ve been applying for others through LinkedIn and the usual channels and can’t find anything. A lot don’t advertise the salary either

anyone know of a 45k-50k job in financial services with bonuses on top (not accounting or financial advice but banking/ insurance is fine) around the midlands? Or recommend companies to look out for or avoid?

There is a large German bank with offices in Birmingham, have you tried there?

KinooOrKinog · 18/08/2023 14:43

It would help if you said what it is you do? Financial services is extremely generic.

I would also get in touch with some specialst recruitment agencies too. Probably 80% of clients use a recruiter these days.

Jellybean23 · 18/08/2023 14:44

Would it help to sign up with a recruiter?

Jellybean23 · 18/08/2023 14:45

Sorry, just seen that's already been suggested.

I’ve always applied directly to the institution so I don’t know any financial services recruiters? Would you be able to recommend any ?

Avoid Barclays for a start though they are based in Cheshire I think.

I wouldn't recommend working for a bank full stop. I've worked for several and they are all soul-destroying.

They have offices in bham too

I’ve worked for 2 of the biggies and found the culture varies greatly. Hq roles tend to be good whereas anything remotely customer facing and or in network (including financial advise is not great)

Get your Linked In up to date, get some old colleagues to join your network and the specialist recruiters will find you. I'm in a relatively niche part of my industry and I think I have every single recruiter in London who specialises in it on my Linked In! Once you connect with them you'll also see the roles they're advertising and there's a good job board available through it too.

When you say financial services, do you mean you work for a bank though? Retail bank? Investment bank? Credit Union? They're all pretty different. And what do you do there? Are you a management accountant, a business analyst, a project manager? A developer? Could be anything.

There's loads of agencies that specialise in finance, but you'll find some are better than others depending on what it is you do. Off the top of my head I think Michael Page or Reed are a couple of the big ones, but there will definitely be better ones depending on what you do. A quick google search would give you a start. I would also start searching for recruiters to connect with on LinkedIn, rather than just searching for vacancies. Look at who your current connections are connected to see if there's any recruiters on there too.

HTH. It's a full time job looking for a job! 😂

I’ve worked for both retail and investment banks and then other players in the financial services industry, ive been on the proposition/ project / product and strategy side of things for a while now, so that’s the area of focus for me

They also have a big office in Northampton and there are lots of analyst, project management, business management, managerial, etc roles which you can easily move on if you have a job you don’t like.
Anyway, when you work for the big banks, your job satisfaction will depend on the role you’re doing. I’ve worked in 3 different ones for the last 10 years and stayed with this current one for 6 years and because of the role, flexibility, job satisfaction, bonus and family friendly environment. Their pay is not as much as some other banks but the other perks like pension contributions, sick pay, etc make up for it. Searching for a job can be so daunting but in financial services, I find that searching patiently has always paid off, even though you don’t like your current job, make sure you don’t rush to take any other seemingly job unless you’re sure you’ll be happy there.

Where in the Midlands? I know an insurer recruiting that might work

I agree with the perks they really are second to none, and advance mat pay and pat pay and often life insurance, CIC, IP and health insurance. As a whole I do really enjoy the sector
