6 week notice period

A few months ago I posted on here asking about a job that I applied for where they called me to offer the job but they never asked me my notice period in the interview. I accepted the job offer and was very excited as it was a HR admin position and I've been trying to get into it for a while without success as it's a career change and I don't have the relevant experience.

They offered me the job but when I told them my notice period is 6 week they retracted the job offer. They said 6 weeks seems an unusually long notice period. I do agree tbh because I am bottom of the barrell in the company, it is basically an entry level admin position that I currently do and all my previous jobs before this have only had 2-4 week notice periods.

I now have two interviews next week, one in recruitment and one in HR!! I am worrying that even if I do well and they like me, my 6 week notice period is off putting.

So I'm just wondering, is this actually a long notice period for my level or is it normal? I don't know whether to tell them my notice period is 6 weeks and potentially be rejected, or say it's 4 weeks and if they offer me the job try to negotiate with my employer

Mines 4 months!

Mines 3 and always has been.

Entry levels in my industry have been at least 2 months as long as i remember.

Okay that makes me feel better then. The person who offered me the job and then retracted it was acting as if no one will hire me with that notice period and I'm doomed to stay where I am forever!

Mine is 3 months. I think it depends on the role, most seem to be 4 weeks, but when you consider that people might be on holiday etc then another 2 weeks is unlikely to make any difference to the whole process.

I’m surprised that it was such an issue for your potential employer. I would be honest again in future and imagine it won’t be an issue with others.

You could speak to your current employer if you're offered another job and ask if it's possible to reduce your notice period? Even by a couple of weeks?

I'm not sure why the new employer had such a hard time understanding that you are contracted to give a certain amount of notice, seems strange and you're probably not the first. They liked you enough to offer you the role and they were looking for staff so it seems a bit silly to remove the job offer based on your notice period.

Hopefully the next employer won't be so harsh

If you have holidays to take then you could use them to reduce your notice period.

Regarding the company withdrawing the offer, that's ridiculous on their part! Surely in the time it takes to recruit someone else you would have worked your notice! Sounds like you dodged a bullet there if they're that inflexible.

I think at a junior / entry level four weeks would be more typical, but I also think retracting an offer because of a six week notice period is a bit over the top and I don’t think you are going to repeatedly find it an issue.
