Just read this article about a 5yo who very sadly died of sepsis https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/mums-agony-daughter-comes-home-30724985
She was fine 24 hours before, went to GP, sent to hospital but discharged.
It mirrors my own story a year ago, DS very nearly died of sepsis after we'd been sent home from hospital. Thankfully he pulled through but this story brought it back to me. Many children suffer lifelong disabilities after sepsis even if they don't die from it.
I thought I'd read about sepsis and understood it, but it hadn't gone in.
PLEASE read the symptoms below and remember them, and don't be afraid to ask doctors if sepsis is a possibility when your child is ill.
A thing that isn't on the sepsis trust list below is limb pain - this child had it and mine did too.
From https://sepsistrust.org/about/about-sepsis/:
How to spot sepsis in children
A child may have sepsis if he or she:
Is breathing very fast
Has a ‘fit’ or convulsion
Looks mottled, bluish, or pale
Has a rash that does not fade when you press it
Is very lethargic or difficult to wake
Feels abnormally cold to touch
If you spot any of these signs, call 999 or go straight to A&E and Just ask: “could it be sepsis?”
A child under 5 may have sepsis if he or she:
Is not feeding
Is vomiting repeatedly
Has not passed urine for 12 hours
If you spot any of these signs, call 111 or see your GP and Just ask: “could it be sepsis?”
