How long can sandwich chicken slices stay outside?

Have made the kids sandwiches with supermarket chicken slices but now I have read online they can only be kept outside a fridge for 2h. Is this true? They are going to a holiday club and would have them only in about 4h. I don't think the holiday club has a fridge.

It's called Ashfield British Cooked Chicken

Pack the sandwiches in a small insulated bag with an ice pack They'll be fine for four hours.

DatumTarum · 16/08/2023 07:42

They'll be fine

Or, in place of an icebox, use a carton of juice or a yoghurt that goes in the freezer the night before. Bonus of a very cool drink to go with your cold sandwich, and no freezer bock to loose.
Don't be tempted to put a weeks worth in the freezer when you buy them, they don't defrost quickly enough. I used to freeze the drinks for the week, put into the fridge the night before. That got them to cold but not frozen in desert temperatures!

I always used to use a frozen frube for achool
luncb and packed lunches… coz the ice packs take up so much space

They will be absolutely fine all day. And even longer. People every day make chicken sandwiches, take them to school/work and don't keep them in a fridge.

What you have probably read online are the rules for the food/retail industry who are stocking this product.

I used one of those small ones that we use in case of injuries. Probably the size of 2/3rds toast slice.

It's not super hot today so hopefully it's fine. Thanks for the reassurance everyone and the great ice pack idea!!

if you leave chicken out of the fridge at room temperature, it can become unsafe to eat very quickly. Bacteria can grow rapidly on chicken that is between 40°F and 140°F. This is known as the "danger zone" for food safety. FoodSafety.gov https://kitchensnitches.com/how-long-can-cooked-chicken-be-unrefrigerated/ recommends that you never leave chicken out of the fridge for more than two hours, or more than one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.

If you eat chicken that has been left out of the fridge for too long, you may get food poisoning from bacteria such as Salmonella or Campylobacter. These bacteria can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, fever, headache, and muscle pain. If you develop these symptoms after eating chicken that was left out overnight, please seek medical attention

They’ll be fine. Ham and that processed cooked chicken is so ultra processed and full of additives you could probably leave it out for days.

VisionsOfSplendour · 16/08/2023 17:44

Sometimes I wonder how so many children born in the 60s and 70s are still alive

How did our parents manage to bring us up with common sense alone 😂

This is talking about cooked chicken.
OP is talking about processed RTE chicken from the fridge.

UK guidance states cold food - e.g. a buffet or packed lunch - can be considered safe for up to 4h while hot food is max 2h.
Google 'four hour rule.'

As PP said, it's so full of salt that it'll likely be safe for longer than that.

Oblomov23 · 16/08/2023 18:28

I choose never to put chicken sandwiches or chicken salad in the fridge when I go to work. I don't think it's that risky.

I did not make that distinction, but yes you are right and I will remember that in the future, it is good to know. Thank you
