To make 11 yo DS wear a high vis when he cycles?

We live in a surburban area which is reasonably quiet. 11yo DS sometimes goes cycling round with his mates, they cycle on roads and tend to stay within the area we live. I make DS wear a high vis but turns out he’s getting a bit of stick from his mates and I think he feels like a bit of a dick wearing it. It’s all quite good natured and he is wearing it without a fuss but I do wonder if I’m being a bit over protective.
I was teased a lot as a child for not fitting in and it’s all a bit triggering!
DH doesn’t really care either way.
AIBU to make him wear it?

Get him a cool cycling jacket ! There are loads out there and are far better than a hi viz . As for wearing a helmet that is definitely not negotiable ! One fall could cause major injury or death . Again show him that professionals wear a helmet for safety as well as aerodynamics

The sad thing is, a hi-vis jacket won’t make him invincible. If he makes a poor manoeuvre or another vehicle isn’t paying attention, he could still have an accident even if he were wearing it.

If you’re happy with him riding his bike, he should be able to leave the hi-vis at home. Wearing a helmet is purely for safety reasons and you say him and his friends all wear helmets.

I don't think he needs to wear hi-vis when he's out during the day, honestly.

I don't think it's necessary really during day time. None of the secondary school kids at my kids school wear them when going to and from school. Surely you can see cyclists clearly during the day time.

During winter when the light is low, then yes.

We are fairly rural village location and a few of the kids here wear high vis in the winter , my son has lights and try and encourage bright t shirts rather than all black . He also has one of the high vis grey jackets that show up in the dark . Unfortunately the group of high vis kids are often picked out on social media for behavioural issues so not massively keen on my son getting blamed for their behaviour .
