Do you know your IQ?

I think deep stress and bereavement have depleted my brain. I get muddled and mentally fatigued so easily.

I do have risk factors for dementia so hoping it's just stress.

IQ is certainly not the be all and end all of cognitive testing but wondered if many MNetters know their IQ? Are there any tests that are free online that are also reasonably accurate?

What is your score? Do you ever feel as though life has dimmed your cognitive function over the years?

148 and was in Mensa as a child, didn't do me any favours as I grew up. Intelligent doesn't translate to academic or good at studying.

Why do so many posters get so bitter about IQ?! Mine definitely isn't so high lol, but if it was I'd be proud. And I'm really impressed by anyone else that got a really high one on their test. Why be nasty about it?!

I was thinking that. OK, it only measures one kind of intelligence.
But you still have a high score for that. I would be impressed, especially as my score would be average to say the least.

Saverage · 16/08/2023 20:59

I just did the little Mensa test, I got 115. I've done a couple of tests before and it was about 125 - I'm not so good on those pattern recognition ones which is the whole of that little test.

In general I feel reasonably bright, but am also bright enough to realise that I'm not super bright. I work with enough extremely clever people to see the difference.

Theres literally nothing bitter or nasty about my comment. Calm down. You're just looking for a Mumsnet bunfight.

I did a test years ago and scored 154. Didn't join MENSA as I couldn't think of anything duller.

However, I did score one more point than my friend's 'know it all' husband, so it was worth it for that alone.

Fuck me! It's the actual MN Genius! Lucky you.

Mine was high (not that high!) and was tested for various reasons until I was about 35. Out of curiosity, I did some tests whilst heading for a nervous breakdown and it did, indeed, diminish. Now I'm less stressed but much older & generally fucked health-wise, it hasn't gone back up. Still comfortably above 100, though, and I no longer have to care as not in a competitive environment.

I have become infinitely more understanding and tolerant of people with average or low IQ. Nothing to do with my own score, I'm just rather embarrassed that I used to be unfairly impatient.

GarlicGrace · 17/08/2023 04:29

bright enough to realise that I'm not super bright

Important point, @Saverage. There's a truism that it's a sign of intelligence to recognise those who are more intelligent than oneself. Part of the Dunning-Kruger phenomenon, I guess.

Dalekjastninerels · 17/08/2023 05:08

No; but I did an Online Test which I know are not totally accurate but it said my Verbal IQ is higher than my Nonverbal IQ.

The part with the shapes had me completely flummoxed and "this makes no fucking sense"

I would have had to pay to get the actual results.

RantyAnty · 17/08/2023 05:22

It sounds like you're stressed.

The common knowledge things to do as in getting enough sleep, good nutrition, exercise, mediation, reading, etc. really do help.

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 17/08/2023 21:37

Sat the supervised Mensa test ten years ago after a dare from friends and got in...proudly display the certificate on my kitchen wall..

I've never been given a number though, just that I'm in the top 2%

Doesn't mean I have any common sense, social skills or emotional intelligence though!

CakAndMoreCake · 17/08/2023 21:54

At the other end of the scale my sister was formally assessed (to access support) as having an IQ below 70.
She obviously has difficulties but I hope it may give hope to a parent to hear that it’s not the end of the world to have a low IQ score. She is now living independently, cooks simply and can read/ write to a functional level to live her life.
Intelligence is a complicated and unmeasurable thing.

poetryandwine · 17/08/2023 22:19

Great post, @CakAndMoreCake Lovely.

Intelligence is indeed complex. I think IQ is reductionistic. Testing to access services is actually one of the better uses.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/08/2023 22:25

Mine have come out as anything between 138 and 146 over the years. Basically I'm smart enough to know that I'm not smart enough for it to actually matter. Good in a pub quiz though.
