How much is reasonable?

Just having an internal debate so thought I’d put it out here to get some consensus.

If an acquaintance was taking your child away on holiday for 5 nights, how much money for food would you send with them?

What are they doing? Self catering or will they be eating out every day?

changed1 · 15/08/2023 18:55

Depends where?

DilemmaDelilah · 15/08/2023 18:56

Depends on the age of the child!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/08/2023 18:57

Where are they going? What are the eating arrangements? How old is the child?

Proudgypsy · 15/08/2023 18:58

How old?
Where are they going?
Do they have any days out planned to places like theme parks?
What's the catering/board situation?

icelollycraving · 15/08/2023 18:59

So many variables, are they eating out vs camping? Age of child etc

TherapyRocks · 15/08/2023 18:59

11 year old, eating out every evening

I don't think I'd let my child go away with an "acquaintance'.
But I'd offer £50 to £100 depending on whether they will be eating out or self catering. Nice round figure

WunWun · 15/08/2023 19:02

£150

NoSquirrels · 15/08/2023 19:02

£100? If that’s affordable to you.

BorneoBound · 15/08/2023 19:02

£100

YoSof · 15/08/2023 19:03

£100

UltramarineViolet · 15/08/2023 19:04

Yes £50 to £100 sounds reasonable if you can afford it

If the acquaintance is paying all other expenses (travel, accommodation, day trips) then I'd be inclined to give £100 I think but it also depends if they are travelling somewhere cheap or expensive (in terms of how much meals/drinks will cost)

changed1 · 15/08/2023 19:06

150 - 200

WunWun · 15/08/2023 19:07

I think £150 is quite reserved for eating out every night with drinks etc then two meals a day. Presumably plus snacks etc.

Anothernamethesamegame · 15/08/2023 19:07

Were they invited away with their friend of something? If so, and you can afford it, I’d maybe give £50 toward food to parents and some spending money for your child. However I wouldn’t worry too much if they were invited and you can’t afford it. If I invite my children’s friends out with us I cover costs, especially if I know their parents struggle financially. obviously different it they weren’t invited but it was some other arrangement.
