Does anyone else find the passage of time really odd and confusing? What year does it feel like to you really?

Five years ago in one way sounds like not that much but also like a solid block of time, but in reality was 2018 which doesn't seem that long ago. Then I think of covid and suddenly 2018 does seem like a different era completely. But still, not like a long ago time.

Then if I think say back to the Olympics in 2012 - that's obviously over a decade ago now - well in 2012, 2007 seemed fucking ages and ages ago then. Even though there's only 5 years between 2007 and 2012, the same as there is between 2018 and 2023.

2012 itself feels like ages and ages and ages ago to me. 2007 seems almost like a different period in human history.

But. It also kinda feels like we "should" maybe be at say 2009 or 2010 by now. My brain can't fully compute it's 2023. I don't feel it was that long ago since I was at uni.

I'm in my late thirties so fully suspect this is one of the side effects of not being a spring chicken anymore Grin

But does anyone else feel like this?

How do you feel about time passing?

Looking back does it all make sense chronologically to you or seem weird and like it jumps around?

You know those mornings when you wake up & you're not too sure what day it is......

I'm starting to have ones when I don't know what month it is 🤣 My brain does a little, is it spring, is it nearly Christmas?

I hope no- one is going to tell me it's a sign of dementia or something because I'm only 50! 🙄

Goodbookandcupoftea · 15/08/2023 20:50

I agree that time doesn't seem to make sense in a linear manner. But for some reason the Days seem so short now...when I was a teenager and into my 20's I could fit so many things into one day it seemed. Now I only have time to do 1 thing and before I know it the day is over. Very strange.

ChampagneLassie · 15/08/2023 20:52

I could have written this (but wouldn’t I keep it in my head 😉😂🤗) age 40 🙋‍♀️

Timeandspaceidiocy · 15/08/2023 20:52

Even worse when I started typing Kylie and my phone autosuggested Jenner

What the actual fuck. Wow.

And I don't have children so my life hasn't really changed much, I still sit on the same pub with the same childless friends!

When I see other friends on Facebook celebrating theirs kids 21st or grandchild's 5th birthday it really throws me!

Like where has that time gone! 🤣

Laiste · 15/08/2023 20:55

A year isn't long. I know exactly what it feels like.

I know what 10 years feels like. I've done enough of them (decades) since being an adult to be well aquainted with how they feel. 10 years isn't long either.

When i watch history programs now and they talk about 100 years i feel like it's really not a vast amount of time!

This!

When my mum was retired and did only one thing per day, I used to laugh!

Now I'm lucky if I get the stairs hoovered over a weekend!

Inthetropics · 15/08/2023 20:57

It all seems like ancient history to me. It feels like 2050 and I feel very very old BUT ALSO very very young like I was suposed to be in my early 20's - I'm 39.

I'm fine with placing events in time until COVID. Since then, I cannot figure when anything happened.

Yeah same. I feel really confused about time since lockdowns. A distant friend posted a picture of her toddler the other day to celebrate her 3rd birthday and I swear she is a newborn.

Boomboom22 · 15/08/2023 20:58

Minogue is the only answer. Surely the jenner one is about 15?

LyndaSnellsSniff · 15/08/2023 21:00

This sort of thing totally blows my mind.

I was born in 1974, so only 29 years after the end of WW2. Almost twice that timescale has passed since I was born. 🤯

Timeandspaceidiocy · 15/08/2023 19:53

What do you mean, waiting to happen?

I basically live in existential crisis mode.

Same here!

DrCoconut · 15/08/2023 21:00

I've heard that your perception of time depends on the percentage of your life so far that it represents. So to a junior school kid waiting a few weeks for their birthday feels like forever whereas a decade or so can just vanish once you hit middle age 🤣. I struggle to get my head round the fact that it's 30 years since I started college in a few weeks. How did that happen?

JudgeJ · 15/08/2023 21:05

nadine90 · 15/08/2023 19:38

2010 - whenever I see someone was born around 2000, I think they must be a child.

I sometimes am puzzled by the ages of the people on MN, how can they not have been alive for, say the death of DIana!
When I find that my grandchildren are studying things that I lived through, Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, Civil Rights etc. then I feel really old and I'm only 75, a slip of a girl!

MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather · 15/08/2023 21:05

The covid years are weird. At the time it felt like one continuous day for me - then )blink) 2 years had passed. A massively surreal experience.

Prior to that, was parenting and agree - the days were long but the years went fast.

To me it should still be about 2011 -at a push.

It's a bit trippy to think we were were singing and dancing about Prince's '1999' YEARS before, when now it's a long distant memory. He wasn't daft.

Make it make sense. How can it be 2023....soon to be 2025! Trippy!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 15/08/2023 21:07

And Oxford University is older than Machu Picchu. 🤯

Quite.

Jenner one is a flash in the pan, surely?

Minogue will go down in history as a pop icon.

And - i was going to say - being well aquainted with what a decade feels like means i can feel how long it's going to be till i die. Roughly obvs. But if it's 30 years ish, i know how long that'll feel.

Where as when i was a kid 30 years was aeons!!

JudgeJ · 15/08/2023 21:09

When I go back to visit friends I have not seen for years I am surprised that their 'babies' have grown up even though I know that mine have!

Timeandspaceidiocy · 15/08/2023 21:09

I always completely forget about the decade between 2000 and 2010 when I’m counting years!

Me too. And Dd was born in that decade!

I kept diaries for most of my teenage years then destroyed them in my 20s as I thought they were cringeworthy. I would love to read them now.

I am so glad I kept mine, cringeworthy as they are (teacher crushes, tennis player crushes, oh I’m so glad anonymous fan message boards exist these days 😳). I have ten years’ worth of them from sixth form to getting together with DH, and it makes quite poignant and prophetic reading sometimes, among all the inevitable self-indulgent navel-gazing. You realise that your youth wasn’t really all that when you read it without rose tinted specs.

More difficult is when you read about good friends/exes who are now having very hard times and there’s nothing you can do to help, due to being geographically and circumstantially separated. I need to come to terms with it but it’s doing my head in. 🥲

I think it feels like 2014
