To ask if many others struggle with motivation at work?

It hits a certain point in the day, usually around 2:30 where I really struggle for motivation and concentration to get anything done! 2:30/3 - 5 when I finish is just hell every single day. Often I feel overwhelmed with how much there is to do, so I put it off for the next day and the cycle just continues until it gets to a point where I cannot put it off any longer. I often feel so tired too, even though I do sleep quite well at night and this really affects my performance.

Is there a way to prevent feeling like this? For background, I WFH a couple of days a week. I feel like this in the office as well though, so I don't think it's a working from home thing where there is distractions etc?

Tips needed please!

Do you enjoy the job? Is the work itself boring?

hp47 · 15/08/2023 15:24

@Poorlilthing Some aspects I do enjoy, but I've been doing it for a long time and it is very repetitive so perhaps that isn't helping a lot!

Perhaps time to start job hunting?

In the meantime make sure you get fresh air at lunch time

Think this is common. Many people would have nap then work a bit later if they had control!

I used to work harder in the morning then schedule the 'less brain required' things or meetings for the afternoon.

I agree with a proper lunch break with fresh air and healthy food. Keep hydrated too.

Me! I feel like this in every job after about 6 months.

I only really work well when I have an imminent deadline, other wise I put everything off and just feel low level guilt all the time.

I don’t really have any tips (hence posting on Mumsnet instead of working) but you’re not alone.

Do you have a good healthy lunch, drink plenty of water and get out for some fresh air at lunchtime? Perhaps you are just running out of steam because you don't have a break and fuel yourself properly.

Could you start each working day by setting yourself targets for each hour so that by 2.30 you feel satisfied with what you've achieved and know what you have to achieve next?

Can you save the easier or more interesting jobs for the afternoon?

The repetition got to me. I knew that if I stayed in my job another hour/day or year it would be same old same old. When I reached that point it was game over, I never got my motivation back. I left, retrained and did something new.

Any chance you could have dyslexia? This kind of tiredness after a prolonged period of concentration is a common symptom, as the brain has to work so much harder to cope.
