Spa Use During Hotel Stays

AIBU for expecting to have spa access on day of check-out beyond actual check out time of 11am ?

Hotel is very rural so a destination place, where we mainly just chill in the spa. It’s always allowed this previously, plus early use of the spa pre-check in of 3pm but they’ve also stopped that now. Hotel is expensive if that makes any difference. Am I a cheeky mare expecting too much ?

If they allowed it previously I can see why you'd be miffed, but frankly I wouldn't expect use of any facilities before check in or after check out.

cherryassam · 15/08/2023 14:01

I wouldn’t expect it generally but if it was somewhere I’d been before had it had been allowed then as with PP I’d be a bit miffed if it wasn’t anymore and that hadn’t been made clear

cherryassam · 15/08/2023 14:02

*and it had been

GU24Mum · 15/08/2023 14:05

I'd definitely expect to be able to use the facilities after check-out and have been able to do so everywhere I've been.
Would assume there's an unofficial kick-out time of the end of the afternoon but 11am is very early.
Have you booked as it would really put me off!

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 15/08/2023 14:07

No I haven’t rebooked for this reason. I’ve queried it with the hotel as it’s now on their website and their attitude has made me feel that I’m being a cheeky mare expecting to stay beyond 11am.

I don't know about after checkout, but when we've checked in early at hotels and the room hasn't been ready yet, we've always been told that we can use any of the facilities if we want to - gym, pool, spa etc - while we're waiting. We never actually do because we're not really into spas or swimming (we usually just drop our bags off and go and do something nearby or relax in the bar!) but it's definitely been offered to us several times.

Coral569 · 15/08/2023 14:12

A spa hotel I've been to a few times allows spa use after check-out (unless it's the same one and they've changed the rules!). I remember being pleasantly surprised the first time round, and on the second visit we promptly dumped our suitcases in the car at check out and headed back in for the spa. I assume that's the norm for a spa hotel as I've not stayed at any others but I could be wrong.

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 15/08/2023 14:16

@Coral569 yes that’s been my experience of them too - breakfast, check out & down to the pool for a few hours.
Usually we’ll have drinks and lunch poolside so it’s not as if we’re complete spongers.

Never used them precheck in as we don’t normally arrive until late, so the new checkout is particularly grating on me.

I’d expect to be able to use the spa any time on day of check in and check out

LlynTegid · 15/08/2023 14:48

I am a little surprised it was accepted in the past, though can understand why the change is unwelcome. I wonder if there have been issues either of crowding or some other reason, as you don't suggest the use for a fee.

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 15/08/2023 14:57

The spa has its own membership, so the overcrowding is an issue apparently, plus weekend/school holiday swim lessons!

My (selfish) view though is that the hotel guests pay more per day so should be able to maximise their use.
Its a very rural venue so little reason to be in the area otherwise.

budgiegirl · 15/08/2023 14:58

I wouldn't expect to be able to use the spa after checkout, unless it's a separate, billable item. Before check-in, then perhaps? But if it's important to me, I would check before booking.

That said, I can see it's a bit frustrating if they've changed it. Perhaps it was getting too busy, as you could, in effect, have twice the number of people in the spa compared to guests in the hotel, if you allowed early/late spa use.

budgiegirl · 15/08/2023 15:00

Well, there's the answer then. Sound reasonable/understandable to me. The hotel/spa is a business after all.

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 15/08/2023 15:11

@budgiegirl that would make sense if the spa membership was more profitable than the hotel guests. Annual membership is about the same as a 4 night stay.

StarlightLady · 15/08/2023 15:15

They have a checkout time because they need to get the room ready for another guest. They don't have to get the spa ready for another guest. Any decent hotel would let you use their facilities on your departure day.

I bet they would still be happy to take oyur money over the bar.

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 15/08/2023 15:32

Exactly !

1 - We are still spending money onsite
2- It’s all part of the reason to book in the first place

OP posts:
StarlightLady · 15/08/2023 15:34

I would make your displeasure known on leaving (if you are still there) and follow it up with an email headed "Formal Complaint".

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/08/2023 15:41

They’ve changed their spa policy since your last stay, which is fine: they haven’t changed their policy since you booked your stay and thus taken away something you believed was included in the price you’ve already paid. You’ve asked for clarification, they’ve clarified. It wasn’t “cheeky” to have asked, but it’s also not something to complain about, you just book somewhere else which has the spa policy you want.
