Loosing a family member to sepsis, how quick will it happen?

My 95 year old grandad has sepsis and they don’t think he will make it. I’m guessing I’m going to have to leave work to travel down and say my goodbyes. How fast does this kind of thing happen? I don’t even know if I will make it

I would guess hours. Sepsis moves very quickly.

Oh I'm so sorry @Lovealazysunday .

Travel down and if he's passed then hopefully you'll have some family members there for support. Safe journey.

My Dad went into hospital last year with sepsis. They tried very hard to save him but he was 89 and thr antibiotics didn't work. He died after being there for 5 days, on December 21st. It was a very peaceful death.

Happiestonthebeach · 15/08/2023 12:15

For my gd last year it actually took 4 months and was very traumatic.
I am so sorry. Hope you've got lots of support and love around you x

My Dad died in 3 days in April this year after getting sepsis from a foot wound. Went into multi organ failure and had a cardiac arrest. Sending love it's a horrible time x

FarmGirl78 · 15/08/2023 17:12

Lost a friend last year. I'd say around 3 days.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 15/08/2023 17:16

As above, it is likely to be quick. Just to say, many people with sepsis are confused or not conscious, so if your main purpose is for him to see you before he dies then I gently suggest you talk to whoever is with him before you set off.

Tragically, About 6 hours for a cousins 16 year old daughter.

changedusername190 · 15/08/2023 17:29

please go as fast as you can you won't regret it.

It can be anything from hours to months - my MIL took over a month to go from sepsis.

It sounds morbid and callous, but...you can ask the nurses if he's got "the rattle". That's a sign that it's going to be hours, maybe a day or two at most.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 15/08/2023 17:52

My dad died within three days of developing sepsis. It was unexpected and even the nurses were surprised by how quickly he went.

Bonfire23 · 15/08/2023 17:56

My mum was about 12hrs

Lovealazysunday · 15/08/2023 19:03

Thanks everyone going to leave now x
