Anyone had an interview at Greggs before?

Sorry, posting for traffic. My DD (17) had an interview tomorrow for a part time (around college) position at Greggs. I'm trying to help her prepare for the interview and I've got some examples of things I think she might be asked; but I wondered if anyone had first hand experience of an interview there and can give us some clues / tips as to interview questions she might be asked?

She currently works in a bar / restaurant so I've told her she needs to think of examples to draw on from that of customer service / problem solving etc, and all the usual why do you want this job and what skills could you bring etc. Obviously I'm just guessing though based on my own experiences of interviews over the years so anything more specific for would be really helpful if anyone has any inside info! This job would mean a lot to her so I'd be very grateful. 😀

I've also told her to anticipate there might be a customer role play type scenario - but obviously I have no idea!

Not Greggs' but my DD had an interview at another high street chain last month.

I found some posts on the student room from people who had interviews.

She was asked if an example of a challenge / conflict and how she dealt with it.

How she had taught someone how to do something and how she assessed it was successful.

Asked her what made shop different from others (this was a key one for that shop)

She volunteers so they asked her about that first and she was really put at ease.

She was petrified but it went well and she came out happy.

Let me ask my daughter, she works for Greggs. Might be later today before I get back to you though?

Amazing! That would be so helpful, thank you 😊

All great examples, thank you. She has a few months under her belt working at the bar / restaurant and she's dealt with some challenging customers there and had to think on her feet, so I'm sure she can draw on those examples.

It might sound like I'm not much use to her but I work in a very specialist health field within the NHS so all my interviews in recent years have been very specific to that. I haven't worked in a retail or customer facing role since I was in my late teens myself about 20 years ago!

@greggsinterview

My daughter is 15 and has never had a job so questions were a challenge. Just volunteering which doesn't bring much conflict!

Luckily interviewer prompted her a couple of times for areas she could use as an example.

She got the job so she obviously did well enough.

'If she’s worked in restaurants before she should mention her experience with food prep and allergens. i don’t remember a lot of the questions they asked me but it was stuff to do with what i think greggs values, previous experiences with customer service etc.'

Hope this helps, the Greggs website has lots of good info re values etc.

My 18 year old dd just out of school had an interview recently. She said it appeared to go well. They asked her her chest size, what shifts she could work, what pronoun she would like on her name badge and whether she would like a cap or hat. Then 2 hours later proceeded to tell her she had not got the job !

Ginandtoxic · 15/08/2023 12:36

I had an interview there but it was quite a few years ago when I was at college. They asked me very generic customer service questions. Asked me if I had any trouble lifting heavy things, asked about interactions with customers, how id handle an unhappy customer etc. Nothing too difficult or unusual

Prioritising tasks may come up. Eg there’s a spill on the floor, someone has a complaint etc what order would you do the tasks in?

Her... chest size?

For uniform probably. It won't have been part of the interview, it would have been one of the housekeeping questions.

Yes that stopped me in my tracks! Shirt size would be a better way to put it! (I initially thought it was a sarcastic response to the whole thread).

OP it's not just specific questions to think about, though why do you want to work here is a generic one.

First impressions are key - she should be upbeat and friendly from the off. My dd has been to a number of interviews for customer facing jobs in the last few years and has been offered most of them. Those she didn't get were when she was in a down beat mood.

christmastreefarm · 15/08/2023 14:38

Agree @Onelifeonly while my DD was waiting she said she made a good effort to smile and look friendly at everyone who came in the room (she was sitting in the break room)

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2023 14:47

I had an interview with Greggs and got the job. However, that was over 30 years ago Shock

I don't remember much about it, apart from a maths test - this was in the days before electronic tills, so we had to add all the prices up manually, work out change etc. I can still remember how much common combinations like 2 pasties (64 p) or a pasty and a sausage roll (50 p) cost and how much change was due from a pound etc. I think I asked about extra shifts, working extra in the holidays, that might have gone in my favour.

Reading up on food hygiene might be a good plan. Also showing an interest - why Greggs, what her favourite product is, that sort of thing.

I couldn't do it now. If I had to endure hundreds of people a day saying 'can I get' I think I'd explode.
