You and your family could be asylum seekers by this time next year.

Just want to point this out, as many posters seem to be of the opinion that asylum seekers are a different species, with different aspirations, different hopes and fears, different medical biology, and different housing and nutritional requirements than the rest of humanity

It could be you and your family next year.

There could be any number of natural disasters in the UK. Meteor strike? Tsunami? Volcanic eruption? All of these are likely in the UK at some point. There could be manmade disasters, war, famine, there could be something more personal that happens to you, you could be a witness being searched for by a hostile government.

You might be a highly qualified professional, ( many asylum seekers in the UK are) you could have worked hard all your life to pay off your mortgage ( many asylum seekers in the UK have) you could have kept yourself fit and healthy all your life and you may also have an assortment of serious or trivial medical needs. You might have french or spanish GCSE to help you, or you might not.

None of these things will mark you out as special, or different, if you are in a crowd of asylum seekers seeking refuge in another country. You will just have to sit and wait and hope with everybody else, maybe for years, your children with you.

I really wish people understood this, refugees and asylum seekers are no different to our own population, some are uneducated, some are criminal, most are decent people, many are highly qualified and come from affluent and successful back grounds.

When ever you think and speak about them, please just keep in mind, this could be you next year.

Most of these so-called asylum seekers are young blokes from countries that aren’t even at war. They aren’t innocent women and children. Many of them become involved in crime - you only need to look at crime statistics across Europe. There are some very naive people out there who believe all these asylum seekers are from war torn countries 🙄

@awaytofrance "Doesn't mean they're not either. Assuming everyone is a lovely person is as stupid as assuming they're not.

Your eyes might be opened though if you had any real experience. It would (one hopes) turn your stomach to hear how women are spoken about by a depressingly large number of men from many parts of the world"

I'm under no illusion that there are some horrible people around - this thread is a great reminder that we're not all lovely people.

Plenty of white British women hating arseholes, paedophiles, rapists, murders, thieves, criminals.

I don't think you're getting my point.

The attitudes I'm talking about are not occasional, they're not the odd man. They're endemic. They're common. They are the norm.

KeepYaHeadUp · 14/08/2023 14:04

@Sunnydays41 "And then the necessary schools, doctors' surgeries, hospitals, dentists, roads? And easily be able to staff them, right? Because we definitely have a surplus of those professions 🤨

And we definitely want to cut down more of our trees and green spaces to accommodate all of that. Because climate change is definitely not a threat..."

Well no, we're desperate for teachers, doctors, construction workers. Shame so many of us would like to shut our borders to them cos we're full. Father of a School friend of my son's is a brilliant tiler. They came over on a boat from Syria. Been living near us for 5 years and he's only just been allowed to start working. He was chomping at the bit to start earning for his family. His wife is learning to drive. She speaks English, he is learning. He's not happy with her having a male driving instructor so it's taken time. Not perfect, but life isn't, is it?

Bobsicles · 14/08/2023 14:04

How condescending and childish.

Here's an idea! What about we employ some of the migrants to help build these things, and then work in them? Most migrants are of working age and many are from professional backgrounds - fleeing is much easier if you have a few quid.

Still, you're not interested in facts and arguments, are you?

Because we have laws around stuff like liability and health and safety. Even a dyed in the wool, born and bred, passport carrying, Union Jack waving, proud as fuck BRITISH citizen can't just walk onto a building site and start laying bricks. They have to get their card first, and be qualified to current standards that apply HERE, not in another country. Would you want some random person who says "trust me my friend, I know how to do electrics" to wire up your fuse board?

Throw away comments like yours don't help anybody.

3dogsandarabbit · 14/08/2023 14:09

Keepyaheadup - So who was supporting him for the five years and where were they living? He has been here 5 years and he is only just starting to learn English?

Jamtartforme · 14/08/2023 13:30

So the houses wouldn’t be funded via taxation? Where would the money come from then? Because asylum seekers don’t have the cash to buy newbuilds from Persimmons.

As for the greenfield land, we have built on 10% of the country already. Now think about what that actually looks like. We still require farmland, parks, meadows, open spaces, play grounds, forests to soak up the CO2 we churn out, natural habitats as I’m guessing you don’t want to wipe out yet more species. How much more do you propose we build on to solve this? And what happens when the population goes up again afterwards do we just keep building?

This.

chosenone · 14/08/2023 14:10

Areas that are struggling with huge numbers of asylum seekers waiting to be processed deserved to be listened to. Often it's areas that already have societal issues and poverty. One place I have seen this is Blackpool! Already a huge amount of issues so the Home Office/ Serco offer struggling hotels a large amount of money to house the displaced people and affectively leave them to not. Why is always the poorer communities that need to ‘be kind’. There are similar reports from Skegness, Stafford and Hanley? If we are agreeing that 500 people a day for the foreseeable future need to be housed and supported every area needs to take their fair share.

Also, of course tensions and possibly racism are going to run high when these people are being supported and others are struggling with the COL and access to the NHS. Shouting down at people living in poverty and telling them to accept that these people are supported is hugely naive and questioning their intelligence massively intolerant.

I agree, we would need to verify their qualifications, and some people may need to requalify. But we have established mechanisms for doing that for other kinds of migrants. For example I know the cross-qualification rules for lawyers inside-out. Other professions and trades will have their own routs. Much cheaper than training people ourselves!

Is the Volcano near Cheshire? Anyone know? We did have an earth tremor a couple of years again that was so powerful it actually knocked my plant pot off the wall. That was a scary time.

@3dogsandarabbit "Keepyaheadup - So where are all these houses going to be built? You can't just build where you want to. The land has to be tested to make sure it's suitable otherwise you get flooding, subsidence etc. What about the wildlife? Or does that not bother you, that we are pushing wildlife into smaller spaces. It all has a knock on effect on the eco system. It's not just humans that live on this planet. I'm sure some of the do gooders on here won't be happy until we're all living in a concrete jungle."

We're not even close to building the houses the govt has targeted itself with delivering. We're really not being overrun and we're nowhere close to turning England into a concrete jungle. We don't build in flood zones unless in exceptional circs (tho crap drainage might lead to flooding) and since the Environment Bill came in planning authorities and developers have to deliver biodiversity net gain, and many are ploughing investment into nature recovery. So yes, building may be bad news for nature on a specific sqm of field but overall can deliver huge benefits. Large swathes of greenfield land (and green belt while we're at it) is crap agriculturally speaking and for nature. It's poor value in terms of carbon capture, ecology and has little landscape value either. It's perfectly within our capabilities to build decent, affordable housing for people here now and for people who might need to come here. It's not going to happen without intent, but it's feasible. Not doing it is a choice.

If building on green land is so good for nature, why has the flying insect population declined by 60% in the past 20 years?

Insects >>> brown people.

I've heard it all now.

Wrongsideofpennines · 14/08/2023 14:17

Sdpbody · 14/08/2023 13:35

I'm pretty sure if all of those things happened, my husband, brother, uncle etc wouldn't just leave us (me, my sister, my daughters, my mother) in a country with disaster all around.

All we are seeing are migrant men, who do pose a threat. Men pose a greater threat than women and children. And migrant men, who come from countries where women are deemed lesser beings, pose an even greater threat.

If you're relying on the mainstream media to show you the stories then you're looking in the wrong places. I know multiple women who have come here as asylum seekers alone. Some were single and some left partners behind. I also know some women who came as economic migrants who left their children behind with husbands and once they found work the families followed. The women in these cases knew more English than their partners.

It's not as simple as insects over brown people.

We can't just continue building over nature to manage human overpopulation. The impact effects humans, nature, insects and animals.

Being a lawyer isn't a skill though. Even the most inept laywer isn't going to kill someone if they get it wrong.

Verifying the qualifications of someone who "is" an electrician in Afghanistan isn't so easy. And if you, as an employer, get it wrong and hire someone who isn't actually qualified, then not only do you have a huge liability but you could be charged with manslaughter if your new employee turns out to be a liar.

Building houses is dangerous. Get it wrong and people can die.

That doesn't really answer the question though, does it?

How many of the young men in boats do you think are qualified teachers, doctors, dentists?

More than the average, given that it takes money and good physical health to get from eg. Syria to the UK without a passport. A disproportionate number of asylum seekers are middle class and working-age.

I live in an area with a lot of asylum seekers. Some of them have a terrible life in the hands of slave masters. Everyday week there is a story about a cannabis farm and illegal workers. The thing is you don’t just import future doctors, you import crime as well. Albanians for a start.. Just why are there young men coming here? Why is it always young men on the boats??
