Would you buy a dollhouse for a 10 year old?

My daughter asked for a dollhouse that's recommended for ages 3 to 6. I'm glad she still wants to play with toys but hesitant to buy something intended for a much younger child.

As its for her Sylvanian Families, its possible that she wants the simple form of dolls house because she'll use it to display her Families as much as 'play' with them

Yes, this is what I was thinking too. Sylvanian Families are as much about building a collection as 'playing' aren't they? And a simple doll's house is actually a nice way to display them.

It's certainly possible that she might grow out of wanting it in her room within two years, but I think that would be the case with most things a 9 or 10-year-old would ask for. I'd be inclined to get it for her if it was within my budget.

I would check that size wise it's the right proportions for Sylvanian Families though.

Of course, but some nice a wooden with a lots of details and furniture.

Yes, definitely.

My DD’s treasured Sylvanians gave her years of enjoyment from the first time she was given one at the age of two-and-a-half, and were not packed away until she was 14 or 15.

Even then, one especially beloved figure and her extensive wardrobe of clothes stayed out and eventually went to university with her.

In recent years various bits and pieces, some official Sylvanian stuff and some beautiful items made for them from Etsy have been appearing in her room again.

When the Sylvanian Family shop in London was closing down recently DD paid a visit for old time’s sake (and came home with the black cat family!) and the store owner told her two-thirds of the customers had always been adults buying for themselves.

If it's not really within your budget I would just tell her that and not get it for her.

If it is, well, I imagine she will quite suddenly mature out of using it very soon, so it isn't the best age. But since you've explained all this and she's adamant, I'd probably go along with it and use it as a teachable moment if she ever does something similar again!

Or it might be the start of a lifetime interest. It will be something she can come back to at any time, not like tech which becomes outdated.

OP, can we see a pic of the house she wants?

Yea possibly! But generally speaking I do think it's quite common to transition between being childish to not in terms of playing with toys at about that age so I think it's more likely she'll grow out of it.

My daughter is a teenager. I told her that if she wanted to get rid of her Sylvanian doll houses I want them. They are not vintage or antique but they sure are cute!

Desperatetime · 14/08/2023 15:31

Yes why not they grow up too quick

JoniBlue · 12/04/2024 04:40

Yes, I would.

Zombie thread.🥸

If it's for Sylvanians/Barbies whatever so she can do imaginative play then at 10 that's pretty normal. I'd say when she goes to high school it'll probably get mothballed though. If it's affordable, just wooden and not hideous then why not? It's probably saying it's for that age as it's safe to use in a nursery professional setting.

If I had the room, I’d buy an adult one for me. I think they’re gorgeous. Perhaps steer her towards a more adult one that will last her for years.🙂

I've got a dolls house and I am definitely a lot older than 10!
