Children swearing?

Has it become acceptable or normal for children to swear?

We have over the last 2 years had a few families move in to our street with young children. They play outside, no problem with that they are generally well behaved if a little noisy, but tbh I quite like the sound of children playing and the noise doesn't bother me at all. The language however is something else. These are kids aged about 5 -9 occasionally maybe 10 or 11. But they routinely say things like fuck off, or pass the ball cunt or any other words you can think of as part of their general conversation to each other, not during an argument or disagreement. I run a youth group and can't say I have heard the kids in that using the same sort of language so I wonder if its just when an adult is out of earshot?

YABU - its normal

YANBU - it isn't usual

That's definitely not normal around here most people would be shocked to hear a child saying either of those things.

I don't mind kids swearing so long as they're not using the words to name call. "That's shit" is fine. "you're a little shit" is not

They're just words and can be very effective when used in the appropriate context

No, that’s pretty bad.

Adults swearing excessively is uncouth too.

Imissivillage · 13/08/2023 18:19

It's rife in my street, I actually close the window now as I hate hearing foul language in their little voices so much.

My eldest has been around swearing since a young age as mother can't stop herself so he has always sworn like a docker. However, I got it into him from an early age only to us and at home and he's been pretty amazing at that. Have been a few slips but nothing major and he never does it in public or around children.

On the other hand I am hearing more and more young children in the park when they are all together alone saying all sorts, things even mine don't say.

So, I get what you mean but it does to me seem be becoming common.

I personally don't like it, but I guess it's probably the way they are brought up by their parents and most probably showing off Infront of friends or younger siblings/cousins

It's everywhere. If they have access to
YouTube there is swearing in most videos that 8-12 year olds are interested in. Alot is bleeped out but not all. We banned DS from YouTube now as often there is blatant f and c words used like it's normal every day language which to these idiots it is!

Normal.

Walk past any school at playtime and lunchtime.

StarlightLady · 13/08/2023 18:42

I didn't vote because I think it has become more and more normal. But that does not make it acceptable.

NotAMug · 13/08/2023 18:56

That age its awful. If it was teens I wouldn't think much about it as I think that is fairly normal 13+ when out with friends. I don't really like to hear it and have always tried to instill in them that in private with mates is fine but other people shouldn't have to hear.
