To think people can change for the better ?

Inspired by seeing Ashley Cain on TV this morning. He was a reality TV 'star' and a pretty horrible one on the likes of Ex on the Beach. About 2 years ago he became a father and his baby daughter tragically died of leukemia at 8 months. He and his now ex partner have set up a foundation in the wee ones name. This morning he spoke about his wee girl the foundation and his faith so well it led me to think perhaps people can change for the better.

What do you think?

I'm unconvinced that people can change, who and what we are is deeply ingrained and going against that takes a constant effort. The true nature of someone will surface eventually.

It’s not so much about changing but more about growing up.
Most teenagers can be horrible and very self centred but eventually grow out of it. Some just take a lot longer and probably need some to jolt them out of their unpleasantness.

Absolutely if you put in the effort. Depends on age too though I think.

I did wonder if what he'd been through had made him grow up or he had perhaps naturally matured ?

Absolutely people can change

They have to want to though. A lot of people talk a good game about wanting to change but don't really want to.

Don't know who he is but yes, people can change for the better. It's difficult though even when the person wants to and is completely aware of all their negative traits and behaviours. So people try but often fail. It takes enormous discipline.

Often increasing maturity can be a natural positive change in a person- someone who was a wanker at 20 might be a considerably nicer 30 year old.

People don't change. I've never known anyone to change. Ever.
People can adapt their actions according to needs but it's still exactly the same person, same strengths, weaknesses and faults - just different circumstances.

Take the oftentimes threaded path from a criminal to a priest or charity leader. A change? Nope. Same fish, different kettle. Same lust for power, adulation and other people's money.

And I dunno who Mr Cain is but I don't believe that much insight can be gained from comparing an entertainment TV persona vs. the actual man going through challenging times.
That's like being shocked that some bastard character from East Enders is a very nice person in real life.
