Ds 8 months has eaten the corner of a book which had a plastic coating and cardboard. I tried to get it out of his mouth (had literally just gone for a wee) and as I attempted it he swallowed it!! It was a huge chunk. Very worried about the plastic part being toxic? Bpa in it etc?

I’d get it checked out. The corner might be sharp.

Youwho2 · 13/08/2023 09:43

I wouldn't worry about it. My 2 both chewed on books. Give him fabric books to read while he's unsupervised because of the chocking risk. Although, I'm sure he'll eat a few more corners moving forward.

RobotsWillRule · 13/08/2023 09:44

He'll be fine. You'll probs find it on his nappy later.

RobotsWillRule · 13/08/2023 09:45

@Howmuchfurther a sharp book cover?!

worriedmim · 13/08/2023 09:46

@Howmuchfurther it wasn’t sharp

@Youwho2 @RobotsWillRule what about the bpa being in the plastic? Can’t believe he did this in literally no more than 40 seconds

HamishTheCamel · 13/08/2023 09:47

It'll be fine OP.

He won’t absorb any of it, don’t worry

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 13/08/2023 09:49

If he managed to chew and swallow it he'll just poo it out. No he won't be poisoned by the plastic, his body can't break it down that far!

Call 111 for reassurance.

My husband ate a nappy pin when he was a baby!

RobotsWillRule · 13/08/2023 09:49

If that was an issue no books would be covered in it. If you feed him books for breakfast lunch and tea for months on end then it would be an issue but not this. I'm sure all babies have ate a bit of plastic at some point.

TheKeatingFive · 13/08/2023 09:50

I wouldn't worry about this, it will come out in his poo!

worriedmim · 13/08/2023 09:50

@RobotsWillRule thank you (your post made me smile!)

Your first op? Not asking in a patronising way, it’s just that you usually freak out by what a first kid does that barely registers with later kids. Says me who nearly rang poison control over a sudocreme incident…

As long as its been swallowed and isn't obstructing his airway I wouldn't worry about it. It will come out the other end in a few days if its undigestable. They put everything in their mouths.

anyolddinosaur · 13/08/2023 09:55

If they can swallow it then it'll likely pass through. The problem with swallowed items comes when they are sharp or when they get stuck.

Keep them away from batteries, those are really dangerous, and have a locked cupboard for any household cleaning liquids.

DD1 did this and she's 17 with no lasting effect. It'll be fine

Quartz2208 · 13/08/2023 10:05

Both of mine have eaten stuff, one more accidentally than the other! The delight when DS went through a stage of swallowing stuff

it will come out the other end

saltrocking · 13/08/2023 10:06

Op my dd has pica and tries to eat all sorts of things. Her favourite is cardboard boxes. She's eaten plastic coated book covers before. She's fine. I do stop her don't get me wrong lol. I'm not feeding her a best seller a day 😂. But yes honestly I've been dealing with her book corner munching for 16 years now, your little one will be fine x

Bookish88 · 13/08/2023 10:19

Honestly OP, the amount of micro plastics in all of our bloodstreams, I really wouldn't worry about a tiny plastic corner off a book.

@Gerrataere yes 🤦‍♀️

AIBot · 13/08/2023 10:23

It will be ok, will pass out in his poo probably. Just make sure he has enough fluids and be alert if he’s unwell.

worriedmim · 13/08/2023 10:21

@Gerrataere yes 🤦‍♀️

It’s a learning curve for both of you. All first parents have a freak out about something. Do you know how many times I banged my head on things to see how much it may have hurt my eldest? Who had long got over the bump and was looking at me like 🤨. Do not eat the book to see what effect it has on you 😂

@Gerrataere that reminds me of Rachel on friends 😂😂😂

My ds ate 50th birthday table confetti, I hadn't realised until it appeared in his nappy. That was a big sparkly surprise!

Try not to worry, they eat all sorts and the quantity so small it won't cause any problems.

Clareretro1964 · 13/08/2023 10:39

My son at half a polystyrene Easter egg - they get into everything with the a few seconds opportunity! Keep an eye on him
and if he seems in discomfort going to the loo or can’t go then get it checked out but otherwise he’ll prob be fine. Just consider anything remotely edible a risk going forward. We’ve all been there!
