To be worrying about child shaking in sleep

DS (4) currently sleeps in my bed, I'm trying to get him back in his own bed but that's a whole other thread! For the past 3/4 nights I've been woken up by his whole body shaking quite violently. It's almost similar to how someone shakes when they are really cold (he's definitely not cold) but slightly more aggressive. It lasts for about 10/20 seconds although feels much longer, sometimes he sleeps right through it but others he wakes up really crying. The last two nights he's also had random spasms of his legs, last night his leg just kicked out 10 times in a row but it wasn't like how he would kick if he was awake, it was almost robotic as it was so quick if that makes sense.
Not sure if this is something that I should be worrying about or if it's just a normal thing for kids to do in their sleep?

I would try filming it and take it to a doctor.

I think it sounds like a seizure, so I would try and film it and make an appointment with the Dr. Write down time date duration of each incident.

Doingmybest12 · 13/08/2023 07:55

Dint wait to film it, go to the dr ASAP and describe it.

I keep trying to film it but by the time I've woken up enough to grab my phone it's normally almost finished as like I say it only lasts 10/20 seconds. I will try harder tonight to try and have my phone next to me and ready to record. If I can get a recording I'll try and make an appt with the Gp tomorrow. He's waking up saying he's really tired even though he sleeps for 12 hours a night, but I think it's because his sleep is getting so interrupted by these episodes bless him

See a GP. What you have described sounds very similar to what I started having myself and the waking up tired regardless of how much sleep I have.i have a leg, arm or shoulder that will start twitching on and off for a while then eventually ill begin to have whole body shakes. If my partner wasn't here I'd be none of the wiser to it happening. Mine is believed to be seizures/fits and a couple of daytime ones have happened since the sleep ones began. Although I am not currently suspected of epilepsy. My daytime ones have been put down to High blood pressure and low blood sugar (I have hypoglycemia) I find mine appear more if I am overtired and haven't snacked a little before bed.

Seizures are exhausting. Go to the Dr first, the video is just a “nice to have” not necessary. It’s important to write down when and how long each time. Do it from memory now. Nothing to be too worried about yet but quickly seen is a good idea.

@Ilikejamtarts sorry to hear you suffer too. That actually sounds really similar to my son though, he often starts the night with random arm/leg twitches and has always had them. But now it's turning in to whole body shakes.

I'll make an appt at the Gp tomorrow and write down when they have happened so far. Hopefully I can get a video tonight but won't worry too much if I can't.

My DM said she thinks it could be nightmares but he doesn't seem to be having bad dreams. Normally when he does I can hear him murmuring in his sleep but these new episodes just come completely out of the blue.
