Too fussy or can nobody clean properly anymore?

Just arrived at our holiday let and it’s not up to my cleaning standards. We called immediately to let hosts know we weren’t happy.
The kitchen was the worst- greasy marks/ finger prints on appliances, bits of food all over worktops and on cupboard doors, food and sticky patches on floor etc- clearly hadn’t been mopped.

I’m typically British in that I hate complaining, but I was just so annoyed that we’d spent over £1000, to be met with a kitchen that needed to be cleaned again.
I am I expecting too much?

No, definitely not!! Place should be spotless and you did the right thing complaining. Hopefully you get some money back and VA n enjoy your holiday.

RocketIceLollie · 12/08/2023 23:23

No. It's pretty basic to expect a let to be cleaned from the previous guests. Just hire some cleaners to do it.

Xrays · 12/08/2023 23:29

That’s pretty basic cleaning isn’t it. Not acceptable at all.

TheYadaYada · 12/08/2023 23:31

Not acceptable. It should be industrial level clean.

Undustrial level clean is ridiculous. But yes, a good basic clean is a must.

Eenymeanymineymo · 12/08/2023 23:33

*industrial

Wakintoblueskies · 12/08/2023 23:36

A kitchen should have been cleaned before your arrival.

However YABU for saying you are 'typically British and don't complain' because everyone says this.....before they complain!!!!

Giddypup · 12/08/2023 23:37

Thanks all. Yeah that’s what we thought. They came over to see what the issue was, but seemed oblivious to it. They said they’d go over it again (so we had to go back out for another hour). No real apology, and we just felt really awkward.
Just felt like too much money had been spent to not say anything.

Well you know you aren’t OP. The kitchen is clearly dirty. Take photos.

Ha! Yes probably

We’ve paid a fortune and the sides had t been wiped- there were toothpaste marks all over one table. Also I told them last year about the leaky fridge and they said they knew- still leaking this year!!

NewUserNameSaved · 12/08/2023 23:42

Was it clean enough when they did it again?
I can’t feel comfortable in a place if I don’t feel it’s clean enough. I hope the rest of the place is up to scratch and you have a good holiday.

escaper · 12/08/2023 23:45

You're absolutely right to complain. I own a holiday let and pay a fortune for cleaning and it's frequently awful. It's so annoying because the cleaners are stopping people coming back.

It's noticeable better in the winter but I think they spread themselves too thin in the summer.

Which location are you in OP?

This was what I was scared would happen when we arrived at an airbnb last week and found the bathroom to be filthy. We were only going to be there 2 days, it was a Friday night and we had plans to go out to meet our son so rather than have to hang around for a cleaner to come we just bought some cleaning stuff and I harrumphed and effed and jeffed under my breath while cleaning it myself.

I didn't understand how the bahtroom was so bad as the rest of the flat was fine (the bedroom was spotless, which I was relieved about as I was dreading looking closely at that once I'd seen the state of the bathroom!)

We were busy till we went home so never ended up complaining to the owners/managers till we left, as I'd cleaned it by then so didn't see the point. I just mentioned it in the review and said it was disappointing particularly after paying the £35 cleaning fee. To be fair they refunded that to me immediately and offered to refund the cost of the cleaning stuff too. I'd taken loads of photos but they didn't even ask to see them, just refunded the cleaning fee anyway. Then I emailed them the photos to show how bad it had been and an "after" one to show how spotless I'd left it (just in case their cleaner had been taking the piss and they needed evidence).

Hope you get the cleaning fee back, OP. At least try for that, it's only fair.

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 12/08/2023 23:49

I would expect it to be clean but I suppose it depends on your standard. I have a friend who would complain about "bits of food all over the counter" if there was one crumb.

Giddypup · 12/08/2023 23:54

@NewUserNameSaved no it wasn’t. There were still food crumbs on the worktops, bread bin and toasted tray. But by then we just wanted to get settled in, so said nothing and did it ourselves.
Fortunately everything else about the holiday going ok, and I know in the grand scheme of things it’s a minor issue. But it really matters to us that a place is clean. All the reviews were really good - hence me questioning, am I too fussy?

That's basic, though. I mean, if they can't wipe away visible crumbs then what else aren't they cleaning that's isn't so visible but you need to be hygienic? I mean, how do you know they've changed the bed? What if they've put a glass back in a cupboard without properly washing it, just rinsing it under the tap?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/08/2023 23:57

Makes me laugh that cleaning in these places is worse than before COVID yet half the listings still have all the guff about COVID cleaning procedures on there!

Thewallsof · 12/08/2023 23:59

I'm a bit puzzled as to why one dirty holiday let = no one being able to clean properly anymore. Feels a tad dramatic.

Yeah I get this. And if it had just been crumbs in the toaster tray I’d of just thought oh well that’s easy to miss. But it just didn’t look like anything had been done in the kitchen at all. The rest of the house wasn’t too bad, but definitely not spotless which I’d expect for over £1000

@CurlyhairedAssassinbeds do look ok fortunately -I daren’t look under the beds though 😬

I've voted YABU - and clearly gone against the overwhelming majority of the vote -because you asked "or can nobody clean properly anymore?"

I don't think Y were BU to complain.
I do think the hosts were BU to think what you describe was acceptable
but I've stayed in lots of holiday lets and Air BnBs and they are overwhelmingly spick and span, so clearly, your statement about nobody being able to clean, is U.

NewUserNameSaved · 13/08/2023 16:06

This is exactly why I wash everything we are going to use when we get into a place. DH & my sibling & family all used to laugh at me and roll their eyes when I started, but when I once found a plate in the middle of the stack with congealed egg on, and cups/glasses with lip prints on they soon stopped. Not everyone has the same standards at all.

Lovetotravel123 · 13/08/2023 16:37

I may get shouted down for saying this, but my guess is Brexit. Many of the best cleaners were from Eastern Europe and the Brits (not all, obviously) aren’t as good.
