Looking for a sports bag. Put that phrase into search in a well-known auction/sales site. 170,000+ results; most of the listings state 'Men's and Ladies' bags showing both dark colours and pastel shades, the listings that are just 'Men's' are all the dark colours and more utilitarian, the listings that are 'Ladies' are all the light/pink/pastel shades.

It's the same with all the horse equipment, lately; some years ago there suddenly appeared lots of pink stuff, marketed for girls. About the same time as pink, 'girly' lego came out. I simply can't believe we're here; it's worse than ever!

I just bought a house and I am planning to do some DIY.

None of the protective gloves in DIY shops that I have seen so far fitted me and when I looked online for some what comes up for protective gloves under ''women'' is gloves for gardening and washing-up...

Apparently women don't do DIY and hold power tools according to manufacturers. Or wear overalls (again all protecting clothing I have seen seem to be aimed at tall men...).

Haven't had issues with riding equipment though. I easily found stuff in neutral colours.

Find out your glove size (e.g. 5, 6 or 7 probably) then search work gloves by size. Physical shops tend not to stock sizes below 8, but it's usually easy to find them online if you search by size rather than sex.

Although I agree it's irritating that shops don't stock them in sizes that would fit women.

I have never had a problem just using tools, gardening gloves etc. that are just sold as things

I don't see then as 'men tools' or whatever just tools, bags, gloves

This

KirstenBlest · 12/08/2023 17:07

@drpet49 , gloves tend to be too large for women, and they need to fit properly. A smaller hammer can be useful for some jobs.

The issue isn't about 'tools' or 'gloves', it's about the items sold as 'women's tools' or 'women's gloves' being of poorer quality.
The 'women's ' versions are usually pink or floral.

@KirstenBlest gods I wish we had a 'like' button...

@ShinyYellowTeapot why does it have to be a 'man's' one? Why isn't it just a laptop bag?

KirstenBlest · 12/08/2023 18:38

Thanks @lifesabitchandthenyoudie . High 5 to you!

I use an ordinary rucksack for my laptop, but my laptop has a padded cover.
I used to have a proper laptop bag but it was heavy when empty.

ShinyYellowTeapot · 12/08/2023 18:45

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn I think I completely misunderstood your post because I thought you were saying you physically couldn't buy a laptop bag because the ones in the colours you preferred were categorised as "man's", rather than saying they shouldn't even be categorised like that. Sorry, I think I need an early night!

What sport is this?

Ds is a swimmer and this problem doesn't occur.

Obviously with regards the actual costumes they are male/female but you search the term of style rather than swim suit men etc.

When you search for bags I just type "swim bag". Then it all comes up.

Other than his club kit which is unisex anyway everything else he owns is purple.

When I type in purple it doesn't come up as female/ ladies.

And this year at British they had a blue jumper with orange decor or white jumper and pink decor.

I think there were more boys (including ds) who had the white and pink than there were girls Grin

The pink blue non sense has got really bad, made worse by these awful gender reveals. Influencers and their ‘pink princesses’ urgh.

And I think all the trans stuff actually reinforces stereotypes too. Because to really hammer home identifying as something that is socially constructed we need to socially construct a huge difference.

Carouselfish · 12/08/2023 19:13

I know, I was buying some dyes with my dd aged 8 and 3 yesterday. My favourite colour is green! Announced the 8 Yr old.
And what's your favourite colour? Woman cashier asked 3 Yr old.
Pink
Good girl! Said woman.

Jeeeeezzzz

Completely

you can’t be a Tom boy.
You can’t be a slightly feminine boy anymore.

Oh but it's just a coincidental "choice" that children adopt stereotyped preferences. 🤐

doingitforyorkshire · 13/08/2023 08:36

It really frustrates me too, clothing-wise especially. I personally don't like pink (or traditionally feminine colours) nor do I like the cut of the clothes or general fashion designed around being female. I prefer dark colours, and functional/tactical clothes if I just search for them it brings up clothing in sizes too big for me and the youth sizes (if they do them) are a bit too small. I had a look in Blacks for some walking clothes, the colours and styles I liked were in the men's section and too big, the boys were too small, the ones that did fit had pink bloody flowers on them! AArgh!!!
Next men's department does extra small clothes which do help me get tops in the colours and styles I like but the bottom half is still big. For sportswear I can usually just get away with the boy's section, I do have to figure out sizing to filter online as women, youths and men use different sizing which is also a pain.
I think If sizing across genders and ages were the same and they broadened the sizing range for all of the colours and styles it would open up more choices.

Greenwitchhorse · 13/08/2023 09:16

Can I say that when it comes to the history of fashion pink is not a ''Traditionally feminine colour''...It was equally used for men and women's clothing in 1700s and 1800s. It was originally an expensive dye to produce and was associated with the wealthier classes.

It is only recently (mid 19th century) that society decided to associate it with women and being ''feminine'' because men's fashion had moved to darker colours and pink became less desirable and (surprise surprise) only associated with women's garments...

So It always makes me laugh when people are suggesting that girls are attracted to the colour because of biological/instinctive nonsense when in fact the whole things is manufactured by the good old stereotypes.

KirstenBlest · 13/08/2023 10:03

@doingitforyorkshire , tactical clothing? Smile

GCSister · 13/08/2023 10:13

Absolutely agree.

Those of you who say that none of this matters..... how do you feel about that fact that these stereotypes are what go on to influence career and education choices and often earning potential? They result in women undertaking the vast majority of unpaid work (childcare, household chores and caring for the elderly) and the mental load.

That's a pretty big deal don't you think?

KirstenBlest · 13/08/2023 11:33

The dressing little girls in pale clothing with lace, frills and bows, and little boys in dark colours is stereotyoping.
Girls' clothes are pretty and impractical, with motifs like unicorns, angels or princesses. Boys' clothes are tougher and have pictures of superheroes, tucks or dinosaurs.

I remember being asked whether I wanted to be a nurse or a teacher when I grew up. My male cousin was asked if he wanted to be a doctor or a policeman.

Girls are conditioned from a young age to be compliant. A girl who is a bit lively will be called naughty, a boy behaving the same way will get the 'Boys will be boys'.

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 13/08/2023 12:17

yes to all these latter posts. It's about much more than colours! And it's definitely got worse with the new gender stuff. I genuinely thought it was changing in the 70s (for the better) but it's gone the other way; from what I can tell it's mainly due to consumerism.

Ironic, really, when you realise they're not catering to the market - @doingitforyorkshire if they catered for everyone they'd sell more!
