My DH says they'd prefer pasta and tinned goods but I like to buy three of whatever treat I'm getting for myself and put two in the foodbank. So this week it was instant latte. He thinks that's nuts. Aibu?

I do donate basic items but on my deceased parents birthdays and at Christmas I spend the money I would have spent on their present on “treat” items that they liked. It’s an enjoyable way to remember them, practical and hopefully appreciated by the recipients.

That's so lovely

I used to volunteer in a food bank. Treats are lovely to put in the bags. Essentials are, well, essential of course but as a pp said, cherry pie and custard or a bar of chocolate or some biscuits can lift the spirit in a way that a bag of pasta and tins to last the week just won’t. Isn’t that the reason we put them in our own trolleys, a little bit of happiness in the week?

I work somewhere where we supply emergency food boxes and we put in treats too. I myself put in the food bank boxes instant coffee and flavored creamer, spices, and mini doughnuts. Our emergency box gets plenty of staples though so people can choose what they need/want. I’d definitely do it!

I’m still slightly baffled about this thread. Every “standard” food bank list I have ever seen says “coffee”. A latte is coffee….isn’t it?
I don’t drink coffee so I don’t really know all the different types but I always thought a latte was just coffee, sugar and milk. What exactly makes this a “treat” but a jar of coffee just a regular item? Surely these are better because you don’t need to have milk to add.

I have donated before, but was thinking lately when I was a bit low.. shit.. food isn't just about nourishment of course..it's contentment.. what if I just donated a bag full of biscuits? After reading this thread, that's what I'll do once a month.
