AIBU or have I just opened up myself to problems?!

Sitting in the house worrying that I've been a bit daft.

Heard a complete racket outside - cars revving, lots of noise, sounded like shouting, speeding cars.

Went out expecting possible fight. Saw 30 sport type cars and and some guys out of their cars smoking and talking loudly. Cars parked all the way up the road. We live near very winding roads, they were parked right up to and on a bad/tight corner. They were driving at speed (could hear them arriving).

I asked quite frankly what the hell was going on. Got told they were doing nothing illegal and we're waiting on more of the "group" catching up. Got told that I could go home. It wasn't my problem. Cue me telling them I won't be told to go home and that it would be my problem if someone was killed outside my house to deal with the scene.

Told them to move off, refused, said I would phone police. They then shouted to the line of cars and all drove off at speed.

WIBU to call the police and to speak to them? Non emergency police said they would send out officers. My concern was not only the disturbance but the fact that someone could easily be dead. DH says I should just keep put these things. As I've got older I struggle when I see something so blatantly stupid and dangerous. But I am wondering if I've made us now a target. (

Background is working in NHS with people with life changing injury from things like this so not sure if this influencing me!)

YANBU. If these things go unchallenged then they don’t get fixed.
We are probably the opposite of you in that DH would be out there and I would be stressing that something will kick off or that we would be targeted.
10 or 20 years ago I would have gone out, but not these days.
I hope the police deal with it and they get moved on.

Woopzies · 12/08/2023 00:43

They've probably got better people to pick on than you. But confronting people like that just isn't a good idea for your own safety - don't bother and simply call the police to get them moved on.

So inconsiderate and dangerous. I'd defo be calling 101 to notify the police. Bit strange how they all disappeared at the threat of the police though.

You warned them and they drove off. Next time, just call the police non emergency number without wanting them and describe the hazard they are causing. Then if the police do say again that they’re sending someone out, the cars might actually still be there and they’ll have to speak to the police.

Really??

You've got nothing to worry about then. In the decade or more car grifters have gathered in my area, not once have they listened to anyone, let alone driven off.

And the police struggle to cope so it can go in until the early hours of the morning before they get dispersed.

I'm not being funny but if they moved on due to one woman having a word in their ear, you literally have nothing to fear.

Please come to my area and work your magic 😁

Very strange indeed.

Unheard of really.

Namechangeme23 · 12/08/2023 00:58

@WhateverMate yes really. I don't think it was completely my doing, I think perhaps the rest of their party had "caught up" too. I'd love to say I'm a force to be reckoned with but I'm barely 5ft3 and size 6. However I have worked in a lot of situations with (hate the word but for describing purposes) "violent" patients. I've become a bit blasé about my own ability (in work I would have huge backup if needed!!). However it's only after situations like this that I'm thinking I really need to not get involved.

For the last 30mins I've heard various cars speeding back up the road. On their own. So im thinking the group has split.

Confronting them yourself is just daft. Call the police and have them deal with the situation.
